Saw a few posts about this on this site but looking for some more feedback.
Current freshman MIS major, I switched from CS because I wanted to get professional degree and work in the IT part of business. Eventually my goal is to climb into higher management positions, that’s why I thought MIS was the right major for me. Also minoring in Computer Science so I can get the programming experience.
Here are my questions:
I saw on some posts that “Never get a degree in IT”, why is that? Does that mean IT shouldn’t need degrees at all or is it just a waste of time?
Most IT workers have started at the bottom to gather experience before landing a bigger job, and I’m not scared of working a position i’m over qualified for just to get the experience. I’ve worked the tech department at a office store close to my home for over three years now and worked my way up there. I know the work that needs to be put in and i’m not afraid to do it.
Is the MIS degree worth it? Should I drop out of the university and attend a tech school that offers CIS? My school is a very good choice for STEM degrees, a lot of people get jobs right after college and internships while in school.
Should I switch to CS? I dont want to be dealing with software and programming the whole time, reason I wanted to go into IT and work with a mixture of both physical hardware and software of computers and large networks.
My ultimate goal is to work my way up to a management position and be respected at that position. Is MIS the best option for me to reach that goal? If not, what is your opinion?
Also heard about MS programs in IT related fields, so would think about doing a graduate program later in the future.
Thanks
