Management information systems a useless major?

Saw a few posts about this on this site but looking for some more feedback.

Current freshman MIS major, I switched from CS because I wanted to get professional degree and work in the IT part of business. Eventually my goal is to climb into higher management positions, that’s why I thought MIS was the right major for me. Also minoring in Computer Science so I can get the programming experience.

Here are my questions:

I saw on some posts that “Never get a degree in IT”, why is that? Does that mean IT shouldn’t need degrees at all or is it just a waste of time?

Most IT workers have started at the bottom to gather experience before landing a bigger job, and I’m not scared of working a position i’m over qualified for just to get the experience. I’ve worked the tech department at a office store close to my home for over three years now and worked my way up there. I know the work that needs to be put in and i’m not afraid to do it.

Is the MIS degree worth it? Should I drop out of the university and attend a tech school that offers CIS? My school is a very good choice for STEM degrees, a lot of people get jobs right after college and internships while in school.

Should I switch to CS? I dont want to be dealing with software and programming the whole time, reason I wanted to go into IT and work with a mixture of both physical hardware and software of computers and large networks.

My ultimate goal is to work my way up to a management position and be respected at that position. Is MIS the best option for me to reach that goal? If not, what is your opinion?

Also heard about MS programs in IT related fields, so would think about doing a graduate program later in the future.

Thanks

It looks like no one ever replied but I would love to help you with this.

For anyone who is unsure what a MIS Degree is, students who major in information systems become experts in how to use computers to advance an organization’s goals. Information systems professionals help organizations design and use systems for conducting financial transactions, managing information about customers and suppliers, and ensuring the security of communications. They study how people adapt to new information technologies and how to advise organizations how to make the most of the information available to them.

I myself majored in Information Systems with a minor in Information Assurance and my advice would be not to do it.
I graduated about 3 years ago and can not find a job in my degree field. Employers either want somebody who has several years of experience (where do you begin then?) and/or the degree did not probably teach you how to be successful in the workforce.

Most the classes I had where business classes like accounting, economics, and so forth.

Had 2 classes that taught me VB.Net
1 Class that taught SAP
1 Class that taught SQL/MySQL and Oracle
1 Class that taught about getting the Network+ cert but the course did not include a test voucher like it should have had

I would stick it out and do computer science
Me nor nobody I know of whom I graduated with was able to get a job in the field unless they had somebody they knew in the company who got them in.
