Hi everybody, and congrats on your acceptances!

So, I got into UCSD as MS. Kind of just went for it because it sounded interesting, but now I'm wondering what kind of job opportunities I'd have with this degree. I'm thinking of adding an accounting minor or a math minor to make myself more marketable. Are there recruits at UCSD who would be interested in this degree?

It's kind of hard because I'm not really even sure what I want to do.

All thoughts and comments appreciated.

Thanks! :)

You probably know this already – but you can always change your degree to something more marketable. Do you know if you have any GE requirements left to do at SD? If you do, perhaps you can spend a quarter completing them, and maybe after that quarter you will get a better idea of what you want to do.

Honeslty, what I really want to do is bio research or biotech. I’d have to stay another year at cc finishing prereqs and I’d end up at Davis. But I’d be happier. I should just do it. I think my dad is holding me back cuz he keeps saying what are you going to do with bio.

The only GE class I would have to take at UCSD is the muir writing class.

This is from a post in the uc davis lj where someone asked where students were working after they graduated. The person who made the post asked people to fill out this survey:
“1. What year did you graduate? What was your major?
2. How soon after graduating did you get a job?
3. Where are you working now and/or what are you doing?
4. Are you content with your current job or are you still looking?”

Here are three answers from students who studied bio or something related:

“1. 3/2009 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
2. Was offered a position from a summer internship I had in 2008 but did not officially begin work until 5/2009 and am still working there.
3. Working in a research laboratory affiliated with UC Davis working on Prostate Cancer.
4. I am content with my current position and will be staying with the same lab when I begin my Master’s program at UC Davis this fall.”

"1 - Winter 2010, Chemistry and Philosophy, minor in Enviro Tox.
2 - I volunteered as a beekeeper and found myself employed after a month (April 2010).
3 - Currently working for California’s Genetic Disease Screening Program as a chemist/research scientist
4 - I am content for the moment since I am doing some research, however the rote work drags me down and will win out in the long run. I would much rather go back to graduate school for further education, and enjoy the same life as itskelp
"

“1. December 2008. Biological Sciences.
2. 1-1.5 mths. Started my first job Feb.9th, 2009
3. Ag Biotech
4. I am content with my job.”

So, it looks like there are job opportunities out there for people who graduate from UC Davis with a bio degree. UCSD would be just as good (if not better) for bio though, although I don’t know how easy it would be to transfer into their bio program since it is impacted.

I would link you to the original post, but it is protected. :-(

^Hey, thanks for the great post! No worries about the link :)

There definitely are jobs for bio majors then, especially if you get a Masters or Ph.D, which I would probably do. Yeah, UCSD bio is SUPER impacted, so that’s why I said I’d probably end up at Davis. I would be ok with that, though. I’ve lived in San Diego for my whole life, so it would be nice to experience something new.

It would be hard to turn down UCSD for another year at ccc; but, what’s one year in the grand scheme of things?

BTW, what’s your major?

My major is computer science. I actually took awhile to decide what to major on as well, and started out as an English major. I’m still not sure if I am going to double major in something (and what) when I transfer.
