I heard that all incoming students have to attend some mandatory events such as ucla volunteer day, and a book discussion, etc. so what would be the consequences if I don't go?

Nothing. They have thousands of incoming students, it’d be impractical to police all of them. I didn’t do either of those events last year, although I had legit reasons. Just tell your RA or whoever asks you why you’re not going that you have administrative stuff to take care of that day, like going to Murphy to get your transcript sorted out.

Nothing is mandatory at UCLA unless you have to sign in. even if it SAYS mandatory

Do we seriously have to read the book they gave us during orientation? I’m almost done with mine, but I’m still curious to know if people DO read the book as asked of them.

I never got one of those books…

No, you don’t need to read the book.

The book discussion is kind of like this icebreaker for everyone to get to know each other. You can easily avoid going. It’s not a big deal at all.

I didn’t go.

Nothing is ever truly “mandatory.” I never did any of that junk unless I wanted to.

Anyways, enforced volunteering is an oxymoron. Kinda defeats the spirit. It’s not like you’re newly released from juvie or something and need hours.

I think the only thing that was mandatory was this event that the RAs did for the floors where you know get to know the rules of living on campus and stuff like that. They asked for our bruin cards and gave them back to us at the end of the event.

If you are living in an off-campus apartment, how do you know what is going on when during 0 week?

Halfway through the book- It’s pretty interesting and it opened my mind about a lot of issues such as how our country acts towards natural disasters and how in turn we act against Muslims.

If you can, read it.

Eh the book wasn’t required (even though they say it is). I just made up some excuse and didn’t go to the discussion. You could always duck and hide in your room too if you don’t even want to give an excuse.
