Does anyone have any experience with this school? I see that it's an Engineering college, but I'm particularly interested in IR/Psychology...how are those programs? What about the social life (especially for an out-of-stater?) And, what type of grades are typically needed to be admitted?

Anybody at all?

I visited the campus...it's really nice. I got in with an SAT score in the mid 1000 and a- average. And, my friend got in with about a 1000 sat and b avg.

I'm also interested in IR. i've been looking into manhattan college too. from what i can tell, it's an engineering focused school and from what i've read on sites like PR and others, the schools strengths lie there only. i've read that people feel the curriculum outside of engineering is fairly easy and that most people dont take it seriously.

i think you need a good gpa and about 1100 on the SATs to be considered for some of their merit scholarships so i wouldnt say it is too competitive.

the location in the city is vital if the other programs outside of engineering are weak because you can still have opportunities in the city to use to your advantage. from my experience with my friends and family who have gone to college, there is usually plenty to do on a college campus, especially in new york city.

as for the IR/psychology programs, i dont think the IR program is very strong. it seems to be more focused on culture studies than anything else so if that's what you're going for, go for it. i cant help you with psychology though.

tuffsuff86---can you describe the campus in some detail? i've wanted to know what it looks like but from the pictures i've seen online of the campus, it seems like it dorm buildings blend right in with the city housing buildings and such. also, if you have some pictures, it be great if you could post them.

The pictures on their web page definitely dont do the college any justice. I really liked the way the campus looks, but if you cant come to NY and do a tour you can actually get a feel of what the campus looks like from watching A Beautiful Mind. The Harvard scene was actually filmed at Manhattan College. The classrooms arent really big so you wont be in an enormous lecture hall where the professor doesnt know your name. I didnt take any pictures.

Hey, thanks to the both of you for adding comments. I checked out that video they have on the website and they do mention the school being in A Beautiful Mind, but I don't think they actually showed the campus too much though. Guess I will have to make a visit over.

Also, their location is Riverdale which is in the Bronx, right? Why don't they just say Bronx?

We're going to look at Manhattan for IR for our daughter. One thing that caught my eye is that they have an 82% graduation rate (in 4 years). If accurate this is the highest rate I've seen in schools at the "middle" of the academic ladder. They are also a Phi Betta Kappa scool (only 276 in the country). The confusion regarding their location I think stems from their moving of campus a couple of times. You can read about it in the "our history" link on their web page.

Because Riverdale is the elite area of the Bronx!!

The engineering buildings are near street level and the rest of the college is uphill. It was interesting going from your back-to-back engineering courses to your liberal arts courses in the time alotted - we all built great leg muscles!

As an actual New Yorker I can say that ABlestMom is right. Riverdale is an elite area in the Bronx, so it's more appealing to say Riverdale than the Bronx.

could anyone describe the campus atmosphere at manhattan? i'm going to see it next week. also, what are the dorms like? do a lot of people go home on weekends?

bump bump bump it up

When I toured the campus, we only visited a quadruple room...very nice...spacious. The beds are pretty high and there are sprinklers everwhere. When you do your tour you can ask your tour guide if a lot of people go home on weekends. If you want to know what the atmosphre is like, well, you'll find out when you vist...

i just came back from my tour--it was ok. the campus felt a little to closed in for my taste. the buildings were ok but we toured the whole place in about an hour, and we pretty much went around in a circle. what surprised me was the amount of people i saw on campus. the quad was FILLED with people hanging out in between classes and stuff. my guess is, since there's no where else to go, they all end up on the quad.

my advice is visit the school before you decide to apply or attend. i think i might still apply as a safety but its definitely not the campus for me. if you like the city atmostphere where everything is close together and there's always someone around, go for it.

we saw a dorm in horan hall. it was a double next to a double with a bathroom in a little hallway that connects them both. you enter the hallway and the two rooms are side by side with the bathroom right next to it. the floors had carpeting (a plus) but the buliding just didnt seem to be as welcoming as i thought. it just didnt have that feel.
