my son was accepted this year but we have never been to the school. What does yours think of the dorms and campus? What does he like about the program? What does he not like? What part of the country are you from and was it a cultural adjustment?
Great questions @BFAmama - I’d like to hear what @Billyboy1 thinks too. My son has been to MSM twice - once to visit and once to audition so at least he has seen it. So I feel for you not having been there. Something that I liked is the dorms and classes are all together - not spread across town.
@BFAmama my daughter is a first year MT student at MSM. If your son would like to talk to her she’d be happy to answer any questions. She could also put him in contact with other students in the freshman class. The freshman class is a tight knit group and a great group of young adults. They’ve been speaking to many accepted students who are trying to gather information and make a decision. My heart goes out to all of you trying to make a well informed decision during these unprecedented times.
I will give you my perspective on some of the questions you asked. First, my daughter couldn’t be happier at MSM and can’t imagine herself anywhere else. My husband and I had reservations about it being such a small conservatory and worried she’d miss out on the “traditional” college experience that we both had. She was adamant from the onset she didn’t care about having sports, greek life, and a traditional campus. Her main concern was finding quality training that would develop and advance her as an artist. She hasn’t regretted the decision for a minute and loves living in NYC. However, I don’t think MSM is the best school for students looking for a “traditional” college experience. Although, the MT major is so time consuming I’m not sure they’d have time for those outside things.
The faculty at MSM really sealed my daughter’s decision. It’s so sad the accepted students can’t sit in on classes and do campus visits. She sat in on David Loud’s music history class and was in awe of him. I would encourage you to google the faculty members and take a look at their resumes. They are well respected working professionals and are passionate and committed to their students. The students at MSM are exposed to many industry professionals on a daily basis and expectations are high. I’d also encourage you to reach out to Liza Gennaro. She is incredibly open and kind. She spent a lot of time with us answering questions.
IMO the dorms at MSM are very nice. The rooms are spacious, especially for NYC standards. They have a shared hall bathroom which hasn’t been a problem for my daughter. She has never had to wait for a shower, rarely sees anyone in the bathroom, and said they are cleaned regularly. They have practice rooms on almost every floor, too. The biggest complaint she’s had so far has been the dining hall for its lack of variety and the hours of operation.
Please feel free to message me if you’d like to ask any other questions or if your son would like to reach out to my daughter. Wishing you all the best as you navigate this difficult decision.
I also like that it is not spread across the city and think that learning the ropes of NYC in a controlled setting is better than learning the ropes post graduation for sure
@ac2680 thank you for the insight. Our son is also focused on career versus campus life and MSM looks like a great option. Were you from the area and was this at all a culture adjustment for your daughter? I know MT kids bond pretty quickly, but wondering what the class demographic is like.
We couldn’t be happier. The area is absolutely perfect for college life in New York City. This training is impeccable. I mean, if you google some of the names of faculty members it’s quite astonishing. In terms of college life there itself, it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s long days, long hours, but it’s preparing them for real life. Dorms are quite nice I have to say! You can do a lot with them or very little and still feels like home. I know it must be so hard without getting to visit these schools, my heart goes out to you all! Best of luck with decision making. If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out.
Hello! three quick questions to MSM MT friends, if you can help!
Do you know how many MT students MSM accepts each year?
Do students need to take music theory before entering the school (or how important is it that they know how to read music before they enter MSM)?
Is there a minimum number of years of foreign language that need to be taken in high school to be considered for this program?
Thank you and sorry for so many scattered questions! This is our daughter’s top choice school right now (she’s a junior in HS), so want to know everything we can —and ANY helpful hints if this is her TOP school!! Happy to private message about this, too! Thank you!!
@kittybell16 MSM was also my D’s dream school even before applying to colleges. She is freshman this year and could not see herself anywhere else. The freshman class is composed of 25 students ((13 girls/12 boys).
I believe they will be accepting 25 students for MT from last year on.
There are two levels of music theory class. If possible, I would advise for your D to take music theory. She should at least know the very basics…be able to read both, bass and treble clef, read rhythm in different time signatures and be able to identify all major and minor key signatures. She will be given a placement test in the beginning of the year. They make you feel very comfortable when taking the test and no stress at all. If she’s familiar with it, it will help her. If she just knows a bit, I guarantee you, she will learn a lot. However, it is hard work. My D was fortunate to have had an excellent piano teacher since she was 9 years old, who taught her music theory. It was definitely a blessing when she took music theory and AP music theory in high school.
My D did not take a language her last 3 years of HS. She took all music and fine arts courses.
Hope this helps and good luck to your D!
@Davale22 thank you SO much for responding. This is very helpful information and I will pass this along to my D! She has been in love with MSM for a few years now. We were set to see the latest MSM musical (the mystery of Edwin Drood) in March and do a more formal tour, but of course plans changed because of COVID… :(. Thank you again!!
Thank you, again @Davale22 ! I may private message you at some point (if that’s OK) as we get closer to audition season so we can pick your brain (Whatever audition season might look like this year)! … as if the process isn’t crazy enough already from what we hear, now we have so many more unknowns! (deep breaths).
