Thumper-As i stated in my post above, my D will probably attend Mannes Precollege in any case because it provides the ear-training, theory and performance possibilities she is seeking. However, I would still like to know how selective the program is because I do not have a music background and cannot judge My D’s singing ability. Her voice teacher says she is advanced for her age and I think she is terrific, but I would like to know where she stands compared to other voice students. If the program is selective her acceptance says something about her current abilities, if not it’s still a great opportunity to advance but it doesn’t say anything about her talent. I know Mannes College is very selective and strong ,but don’t know if the Precollege division operates differently. The teachers in precollege are not the same as those in the regular college, etc.

The Mannes program sounds like it will give your daughter a great experience. She will likely grow and flourish there. Congratulations to her.

Researchmaven,

When were you notified that your daughter had not gotten into MSM precollege?

Researchmaven: the best way to judge whether your daughter is talented and how she stacks up with other singers is for her to do competitions. All-State, NATS, MTNA, local scholarship competitions, solo and role auditions. If she comes out on top or in the finals in most of these situations, she (and you) should be encouraged. If not, research is appropriate as to whether she is singing the most appropriate repertory and singing it with good technique. “advanced for her age” does not mean much for a singer, though it may be a negative…a young singer should sound like a youthful singer. If you would like to send me a PM telling me where you live, I can advise a teacher or two in your area at a college or university who could give the kind of specific feedback you may need. As Thumper says, the issue is not how competitive the programs are, it is what your daughter needs, and she is where she is…take it from there.

Did anyone hear back from MSM or Juilliard for Pre-College Voice? My D heard back from Mannes so far- (she was accepted) Can’t stand the waiting…

Abco-
Word on MSM from people who have applied there is that for all the areas they don’t give out information until 6/15. With Juilliard pre C, I can’t talk about the voice program, instrumental kids have already gotten notified by e-mail because this weekend they have placement exams for those who were accepted…but that may mean nothing for the voice program, I don’t know how they operate.

Got the Juilliard email-sorry to say she did not get in. We figured it was a longshot anyway. She had a great audition and all in all a very positive experience. Thanks for the info on MSM. I was just confused because I read in another post that someone had already found out that their child did not get into MSM after their call back audition.

I am sorry to hear that. I guess the voice program is like the instrumental one then, they get the results out at the same time…

This was our son’s third audition at Juilliard and turned out to be the magic one, there are plenty of kids in there who took 4 and 5 attempts to get in. I can’t speak for the voice program, but according to our son’s teacher the level of the auditioners this year was quite high (she thinks word on the street is that the contraction at JPC is finished, and also that a lot of kids graduated, so kids felt more encouraged to audition) and I wouldn’t be surprised if that holds across into voice as well. Even the fact that his teacher teaches in the pre college program, so she knows what the auditioners are looking for in terms of technique and such, it was a difficult process (he is a violinist)

I wish your daughter well, and if she decides to go to MSM, I am sure she will find it rewarding:)

Just a quick note to say MSM precollege letters of acceptance have gone out. My daughter received her acceptance today to the voice program. We’re all very excited in my home. Best wishes to all your children, wherever they decide to study.

Happy to say my daughter received her MSM acceptance letter today. Now it is a choice between Mannes and MSM. My daughter loves MT as well as classical singing. MSM offers both,so maybe she should go to MSM? Anyone have any insight as to the program at either school? MSM assigned her Amy Williams as her teacher. Mannes lets you choose with whom you can study. I am open to suggestions. Congratulations to all who endured the audition process, I am constantly in awe of these young adults and their talent.

Hello, I know that this is a really, really late comment; I’m auditioning for MSM and Juilliard soon. Do any of you guys know the chances for a female harp player?

angelacao, best to start a new thread than posting on one that is 4 years old.
