I’m new to these boards and have many questions. The oldest of my five children is in her freshman year of high school and has recently applied for the precollege program at MSM wishing to study voice there for the next three years.

Is there anyone here who has experience with MSM precollege, particularly the vocal program, who might be able to tell me generally how many openings they have each year? She is working hard to prepare, but we’re trying to guage her chances. Is the vocal program particularly competative? I know Julliard’s precollege program is extemely competative, but haven’t heard as much about MSM.

Why not simply give them a call and inquire about the number of openings? Most programs don’t deliberately try to waste people’s time by encouraging auditions when there may be no spots. MSM has recently added musical theater to its other offerings for voice students (3 choral ensembles and opera workshop) and overall the pre-college program is great.
good luck to you and your daughter!

I am new to the site also but a friend of my mom told us to let my daughter audition. She plays the cello and is a freshman in high school. We are in NJ so they thought it would be convenient and thought a lot about the program both daughters were in the program and went as undergraduates.

I too am looking for information. We did send in an application for audition.

My D attended the MSM program for her last 2 years of high school. I highly recommend the program - except I had to be up at 6:30 am every Saturday morning to put her on the commuter train. She returned at 7:30 pm always with a big smile on her face. MSM is a first rate conservatory with a precollege program to match. The program does require an audition and is fairly selective. All of the kids seem to have a great deal of fun and the culture is somewhat relaxed and not stressful.

My son is a graduate of MSM precollege in jazz. It was his life for the two years he attended. It was a fabulous preparation for conservatory life and his teachers were excellent. I was not aware that there was voice in the precollege! But, now I see that there is a very nice one. When you are in the jazz department you feel somewhat like the stepchild of the classical program, but the jazz students joke about it and love their underdog status anyway. Good luck to your daughter. We are lucky to live in an area where our kids can take advantage of such a great music program.

For those who have applied, when should we hear something about the time of the audition? Also, MSM says an accompanist is provided. Will there be any time to rehearse with this accompanist, or should we make arrangements to bring our own?

I wouldn’t want to rely on info from the forum for something as important as to when to expect an audition time.

Check the website and application materials closely. Most will eyeball a notify date, and hit it within a day or three. If you haven’t heard within 5-7 days of the anticipated or stated date, contact the program directly. Sometimes emails go unsent or misdirected, things fall though the cracks.

The accompanist policies and procedures should also be on the website, although in some cases detail is provided with the notification of audition time.

The application said an appt time would be sent via email after April 1. I still haven’t heard anything at this point. Do you think it’s time for me to email them, or should I wait another week or so?

Just a quick update for any others waiting to hear from MSM precollege. I contacted them today and it turns out audition notices were mailed today and we should hear something by the end of the week. Good luck with auditions everyone!

Hi, I’m new to these boards and I know these are old posts, but does anybody know anything about the piano program at MSM or the auditions? I have a couple questions about it…

MSM pre college is a competitive admit, it is one of the top pre college programs around and gets a lot of high level students applying, so it won’t be easy getting in there, despite rumors to the contrary…Piano in general is a tough admit, like Juilliard it attracts a lot of high level students, many of them from other parts of the country. I believe MSM like Juilliard has started pre screening in admissions, which tells you they get a lot of students applying (I don’t know numbers at MSM specifically, but on Piano you might be talking about 10% or less get in from those who initially send the pre screen).

One other point, don’t be discouraged if you don’t get in at first pass, these days that is not uncommon,it may take a couple of attempts before getting in.

MSM college is likewise very competitive, it is up there in tough admits, especially in the areas like violin and piano and voice.
