Manhattan School of Music questions :)

Hello parents and musicians !

I’m a high school senior student and is preparing the admission for MSM (and several other universities; MSM is no. 1 on my list)

I’ve been looking at MSM school’s site for couple days now, and is wondering how much does academic courses’ grade will affect the result of admission considered MSM is a conservatory? (or is audition basically the key?)

p.s.(1) I know there are a lot of great advices/personal experiences on this forum and pretty much look through it(i think.), but it would be nice if anyone can provide me more information/ advices/ personal experience specific regard to MSM (my parents and school teachers/ counselors doesn’t know much about U.S’s school, i’m pretty much on my own searching for resources :p)

p.s.(2) Anyone that are currently enroll MSM or know the school well, is tenor saxophone(jazz) a competitive instrument there? (I know the school is basically very competitive, but tenor sax compared to other instruments?)

Thank you!!

MSM is a conservatory like Juilliard, and I am pretty certain that academics don’t influence getting in the school, it is all the audition and ability. That said, I believe they check academics to make sure the student isn’t someone who has spent high school flunking courses and such. I don’t think high academics, on the other hand, would influence much in admissions and I would be surprised if it had any influence with aid.

I am not involved with MSM, but their Jazz program is a well respected one, and I suspect like admission to the conservatory in classical music, it will be a very competitive admissiion. I can’t talk about specifics, but I would count on pretty high level competition to get into the school.

As far as auditions go, I remember it being quite stressful trying to find a practice room (there was a shortage, and no reserved rooms to warm up in). If you can find a reed and basically do your warm-up wherever you’re staying, that would probably be a good idea.

Good luck!

D3 really liked the building MSM is in - although those heavy double doors were a challenge for a nervous petite auditioner carrying an instrument, bow, and music. She had no trouble finding warmup rooms, but her assigned time was early in the morning, which may have made a difference.

She found everyone at MSM very friendly and helpful, and liked the idea of the attached dorm space. IIRC, they place most of their decision on the audition.

When my daughter auditioned at MSM there was an interloper in her assigned warm-up room. She was too timid to do anything, but the MSM-assigned accompanist came to the rescue and kicked the other person out!

I don’t think academics matters much for admission. Of course, if you are failing all your courses, that might be seen as a big red flag!

The jazz program at MSM is extremely competitive.

Sax is a very competitive instrument. Practice and be prepared!
