Manhattan school of music

Anyone have info on this school? I am not familiar with it and I saw that they are offering MT there starting in 2016

The chair of the new MT program is Luis Perez who was MT head at CCPA-Roosevelt for the past 9 years. He was very successful and beloved at CCPA (my D is a junior there).

I would definitely look into it. Many students go there for vocal performance. (Some of D’s friends have gone there after getting their BM from NYU in vocal performance.) They have excellent pre-college program as well.

I sent an email about financial aid with some questions since the net price calculator came up with nothing and it’s a bit pricey. Wondering how many they accept there…

@theaterwork, the MT program is brand new and won’t even launch until Fall 2016. They themselves may not even know how many they intend to “accept” though they may be able to give you an idea on the targeted size of the program. It looks like a very interesting and exciting program that I expect is more than worthy of a look.

The woman from financial aid got back to me. They give scholarships based on your audition " score" ranging from a few thousand to full tuition. They don’t use SAT scores in evaluating and only use GPA a bit it appears. Sounds like an interesting program.

Hmmm…this does sound like an interesting program…adding it to my D’s “list”

My daughter and I did their tour (regular tour, not geared toward MT) and info session. They said there was no set ceiling on numbers of MT students, but that they anticipated 20 something. The music school has an excellent reputation, both for classical, jazz and for VP. The whole school is contained in two buildings - a vertical campus - immediately north of Columbia U and Barnard - a student-flavored part of the city. It is very, very much a conservatory atmosphere (because that’s what it is!) - hallways full of the sounds of instruments being played, etc. so, even more so than at a place like BoCo, which has several art forms pursued by its student body, it feels strictly like a music conservatory. If your student is more dance or acting focused with singing subsidiary to that, I wouldn’t consider MSM, though of course all three disciplines are part of the curriculum.

And of course bear in mind that as the first MT class, that class will not have three other years of MTs - and thus a broader social circle of similar kids - ahead of them. And they will be on a campus with many young classical musicians, outside of their group of 20+ – something they should think about. The benefit of course is that they will theoretically get an incredible level of attention, being the guinea pigs. And of course the other giant benefit is the access to the professionals working in theater in NYC.

There is a dorm (next door) located within a high-rise building on several floors, and while it is a dorm-like atmosphere on the floor (and nice rooms) this is not your typical college experience. There seemed to be little in the ways of clubs, organized student activities etc., and much emphasis on attending the many performances held on campus. It’s very much a pre-professional, very music-dedicated, school.

For dance they are evidently renovating or building some new studio space, but this was not on the tour.

One thing to be aware of is that the faculty list, though amazing, is not the f/t faculty, which - when we did the tour just over a month ago - was not finalized, and the response was a little vague on just how much the people listed would be teaching - it’s still all being worked on.

Hmm my D is singing focused so this would be good for her in that aspect plus she’s a junior so they have a year to work out some kinks on the Guinea pigs lol thanks @rampions for your insight !

The new MT head is a serious about dance. I would imagine he’s a large part of why there is a dance emphasis MT major at CCPA, so I think dance will most definitely be more than covered in the new program. I know of students who have gone there for voice and they are amazing!

@GSOMTMom - that’s good to know. My daughter and I both liked the vibe, but it is a very specific one, unlike any other schools she’s/we’ve visited. Dance is as important as voice to my daughter, and in fact several of the teachers whose classes she takes at STEPS are listed as faculty. Of course there’s that pang of … but at STEPS she can take a class with the same teachers for $19 a pop… Overall what it felt like to me was kind of a hybrid between a collegiate life and a young professional life.

Wow @rampions, thanks for your review…this definitely is peaking my interest for my daughter. Shes only a sophomore (yes, I ask a lot of questions and participate on cc a lot for my D being a sophomore…trying to be proactive here…lol…and living vicariously through all of the upper classmen parents) She is very dance focused, but wants MT as her major…and she would prefer a conservatory or BFA program. and like @theaterwork I’m thinking the kinks will all be worked out by then…and the dance focus could improve!

For those of you who have expressed interest in this program, is the planned curriculum posted anywhere?

Anybody auditioning for the new MT program at MSM?

@jbrideau Not until the end of February. My oldest went to their precollege for classical voice and we have many friends who have gone their for voice, instrumental and composition. We were excited to hear they were offering a BFA in MY next fall!

@Autmivs625 our D is auditioning end of Feb also! I’m hoping they have fewer auditioning than some of the other more well-known programs!

@jbrideau My daughter is also auditioning at the end of February. Will be her last audition of the circuit. Looking forward to that moment!

@rampions same here! Feb 29 is the last one!
