Manners

So I'm pretty big with proper table manners, and I was wondering how many of you guys out there are too. Some things that really annoy me are chewing with the mouth open, talking while chewing, elbows on the table, and using silverware wrong (don't see that happen a lot though).

This is basically because as I was growing up, my family was pretty strict about manners. I was just wondering if anyone else gets easily annoyed by bad table manners like I mentioned above?

chivalry is dead in my family. We eat how ever the hell we want.

I never held my silverware correctly growing up and it was an issue of such contention between my father and I that my mom eventually stopped insisting we eat at the table together. We all eat alone in our bedrooms.

Turns out I have nerve damage and CAN’T hold the silverware “properly.” Oh darn!

Meh, the silverware part isn’t as big a pet peeve as is the chewing. Anywho, if it’s because of nerve damage, then it’s understandable.

UGH poor table manners bother me so much. And NOBODY I know in college has good table manners. I’ll go to dinner with my friends and I’m surrounded by open mouths full of food and people texting at the table… one of my friends actually sucks the food off her fingers instead of using a napkin.

Elbows on the table don’t bother me so much, nor does holding silverware incorrectly but the sounds that some people make when they eat just make me nauseous. Ew.

By no means am I a proper princess myself, but chewing with the mouth open/chewing loudly bothers me, only because it’s so distracting. It’s like those people who are constantly tapping on a table in a quiet room, drives me nuts.

Chewing with your mouth open is the only thing that annoys me. It’s actually pretty nasty. Makes you look like a cow chewing its cud.

Definitely tops the list. Talking while chewing is another thing I’d consider important. Elbows on the table, never paid too much attention to that.

My parents were raised with all eating manners but they’ve been pretty lenient with us. So its been all good.

I always figured it’s pretty standard to close your mouth when you chew and to swallow before you talk. It’s disgusting any other way.

There’s one person in particular I know, and if she sits opposite me I just have to move seats. It’s repulsive but I don’t want to hurt her feelings so I make an excuse for leaving.

When people slurp their soup is annoying too.
Sadly I come from an Asian family.

I’m not a huge stickler for table manners but there are a few that get to me.

-As others have already said, chewing/talking with food in your mouth (although I’ll admit that I’m guilty of this sometimes - it’s awkward when someone asks you a question when your mouth’s full, and it’s taking forever to chew, and you don’t want to make them wait forever).
-I’m OK with elbows on the table, but it’s disgusting when people have their arms on the table, curved around their plates, and they’re hunched over their food. It’s like they’re trying to guard their food or something, lol. Who do they think is going to come along and try to steal their food?
-Burping and making no attempt to cover it up.
-Reaching across other people for something instead of asking for it to be passed to them.
-(More an issue at home than at dining halls) - You ask for something to be passed to you, and the person passing it to you takes the last bit of whatever it was and then hands the container to you. :P

Nah, with two full time working parents, one of whom never came home until after dinner, table manners were kind of left out in my upbringing :p.

^ Same with me. Dad left before dinner and mom came after dinner. I was usually at the table by myself, haha. But I do have manners. I don’t eat with my mouth open because I do find it repulsive. Friends texting at the table annoy me. I remember going on a band trip for an away game. I went out to eat with four other kids in my section. All of them had their phones out! It was ridiculous.
