Recently, I have been encouraged to look into the Mannes College of Music for a possible music school in colllege. I don't know much about the school, and to be honest haven't really heard about until now (no offense). So I have some questions;

How well known is the school, is it viewed as a music authority?

How does it compare to other music schools? Top of the line?

Is it competative? Less than 25% of applicants accepted?

How is its voice and opera program? Are its voice and opera alumni big performers today? How is the quality of the program and voice faculty?

Mannes has some good graduates, Nadine Sierra who won met auditions at 21 like a year or two studied there, and my voice teacher studied there, and he is absolutely fantastic and very successful. I’ve seen some of his classmates perform, and they were also brilliant. If I remember correctly, you’re a freshman who lives in NY, and you go to a performing arts school, no? If that’s right, your teacher, and other people in NY can give you good information. Of course, not every school is for everyone, and whoever suggested you look in to Mannes probably knows you and your voice well. Plus, probably junior year, you can visit and have a sample lesson with faculty there, and see if you like it. I think it has a decent reputation, the teacher is the most important, obviously, and faculty etc. might change before you apply for college.

Mannes has been discussed before. Here is one thread but if you search further you will find alot of information.

Mannes is very selective, very small (the year my D got it there were 6 in the freshmen class) and you take the same theory classes as the composition majors so it is very intense in that respect. Frederica Von Stade was a famous graduate of Mannes.

Another thing you should know about Mannes is that of it’s 300 students, about 200 are graduate students. I don’t know if that proportion holds across all instruments. It also has a pretty intense theory program.
