Manville apartments vs Ida L. Jackson Grad House

Hi everyone:)

I am a newly admitted international grad student for fall 2009.. Nowadays I am looking for a dorm to move in when I arrive..

How would you rate Manville apartments and Ida L. Jackson Grad House?

I am am from Turkiye so I don't have a clear idae about the extra costs of living in these apartments.. Approximately how much is paid for electricity and stuff beyond the rent?

Thanks:)

PS:I also have the i-house choice.. I dunnooo:)

anyone? :)

They’re both fairly new buildings. The main difference is that Manville only has studios while Jackson has shared apartment style living (eg, 4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms).

They’re also in different locations. I heard from one person that Jackson was too noisy since it was close to the frat houses, but I haven’t heard the noise complaint from anyone else. Jackson is closer to where the undergrads live and a bit closer to campus. Manville is on Shattuck, so it’s right by downtown Berkeley.

The main difference between your choices is how much privacy you want vs interacting w/ other ppl: Ihouse would be the most social, Jackson you will meet your apartment-mates and their friends, and Manville you are living alone.

If you stay at I-House, make sure your room is on floor 6-8.

Ektaylor;

what is the problem with the other floors?

They’re filled with (1) cramp double rooms and (2) undergraduate international students not that concerned with their studies.

Floor 5 to 7 hold almost entirely singles and house the graduate residents.

Ektaylor,

thank you for informing me on that… I’ll make sure to get a room on floors 5-7

Besides the UCB owned housing, co-ops, and i-house, how else should I go about finding housing for the school year if I am from out-of-state and don’t have the luxury to search for apartments in person?
Craiglist?
Any other suggestions???
