March 12th SAT--Essay Grading Error

dunno, but if you think they lost your essay, at least you can see it online on April 16th. When they say detailed score report online, do they mean that you can see the same thing that came in the mail with the old sat

I just called but the Rep didn't know what to do with my situation, so I asked her to sent out a request regarding my question. I should be receiving a pohne call and email tomorrow telling me what is going it.

My Multiple choice subscore was 70 btw, what do you think my total will be depending on my essay score?

For hand-scoring, call CB at (609) 771-7600

Arow, since you got a zero it might just be that your score isn't up yet. The same thing happened to my friend, she called and they said it wasn't graded yet. Try to speak to someone higher up than whoever answers the phone, you might have better luck.

AroW, did you write your essay in pen?

yes. I believve I did. However, I don't think it said anywhere on the practice tests to use only a pencil. I figured using pen will make my writing more legible and won't rub off, but apparently I am mistaken.

What should I do? Should I ask for handscore? I will send them an email right now.

My friend did the same thing. He called in and was told that the entire essay needed to be written using a #2 pencil only (the scanners didn't pick up the pen and essay ended up looking blank or something like that). CB told him that since this was the first administration, they will re-score all of the ones written in pen and will be in touch with the affected students.

Thank you/
i feel a little better now

Is there anyway to get the essay regraded? My essay subscore was much lower than what I expected....

Call in and ask about an essay score verification service. I think it's different than the MC hand scoring service.

Not with the representatives I talked to. That is representatives plural (two) on two distinct days. I think its included in the MC verification service. However, just to be safe, ask for the essay verification service. Worst comes to worst, they'll tell you they're the same thing. Its a bit unnerving many of the call people don't know what the F U C K they are talking about. Most are probably blowing that bud right now. It must be a bad job. Disgruntled students and parents swearing at you and asking you dumb and obvious questions. Hopefully, I can get a much better job than that.

AroW, the same thing happened to me! I also wrote in pen, so perhaps that is the problem. However, my proctor never said anything about NOT writing in pen, and everything I've read said to write the essay in pen. CB better fix this problem, they should have stated explicitly to write in pencil. Even other students in my testing room were writing in pen, so I think that CB obviously was not clear enough on what they wanted.

I can't pay for an essay rescore, the price for the test alone is expensive for me. Does anyone know if CB is really going to fix this error, or are they going to charge a fee? I called CS and they could not help me; after 3 calls (one of the representatives actually hung up on me! I was on hold, then they picked up the phone, listened for a few seconds, then hung up). I spent over an hour trying to find out what the issue was, only to be told that a 'request was filed.'

Should I call them and tell them that I am absolutely certain there was an error with my essay, and demand that they make sure they regrade it? The rep. told me they would contact me within two weeks (I highly doubt that). This is really upsetting sigh they probably did it to get more money out of us.

So, AroW, what are you doing to resolve this issue? Are you actually going to pay for the essay rescore?

aro the same thing happened to my friend and she's the best writer I know

It seems like that it happened to enough people on this board and in my school for CB to ignore it. I also think this is unfair, because nowhere in the essay prompt did it say to use pencil, nowhere. Also, as for all standardized test essays, pen is always recommended because it is easier to read and won't smudge.

The rep also filed a request for me. the email replies I've received aren't very helpful. INone of the rep could identify the source for my problem; I figured it out myself. I have to call them soon and tell them about my situation explicitly, because CB is apparently too dull to give any reason other than "Any essays that did not stayed on topic received a 0"

All, trust me, all essays written in pen are going to be re-scored without an additional fee (free for this first administration, at least). You can call in to make sure you're on this list of re-scores, but CB has informed me that they are going to check for all essays written in pen.

pureiridescence, where did you read that pen would be okay? I always assumed that #2 pencil was required for the answer sheet, so I didn't even think of using a pen. I believe my proctor said pencil only...at least I thought so.

I suppose I will be on the phone this afternoon with the CB mumbles. I want to make sure they regrade my essay.

Phaedrus, maybe it is my fault that I used pen, because I used prep books for the old SAT I and SAT II Writing. I certainly do not want to shell out money for the new book put out by CB, so I checked out books from my library. Of course, now I have the new CB SAT book waiting for me at the library smacks forehead.

Anyway, I used:
Barron's 2nd Edition SAT II Writing
CB's 22 Real SAT II: Subject Tests
The practice SAT on the CB website

It does not state anywhere NOT to use a pencil, even on the SAT on CB's website. The Barron's book had pens listed as materials needed for the test, and later in the book the author stated that the essay was to be written in pen.

Since nothing else negated the information provided by Barron's I figured it was accurate, even though they completely revamped the test. I do not remember reading anywhere to ONLY use a pencil, and CB never said anything about it on their website (from what I can remember). Essays are usually written in pen... Anyway, even my SAT Prep course (which is quite useless) did not say anything about writing the essay in pen, but because the course isn't very good, whatever information they give out is readily available on the web (usually CB), so I was using recycled information that still did not state "YOU MUST WRITE IN PENCIL."

When I get the new SAT I book, I'll look in it to see if it says anything about the pen/pencil deal.

the ONLY place on the SAT answer sheet that implied writing the essay in pen is in the first page. Look at the new sat practice tests from the blude book. It reads "Use a #2 pencil only" in tiny prints on the upper right hand corner. Its quite ambiguous because it doesn't refer to any section in particular .

For something this important, The least they could have done was to at least indicate in the essay prompt, question booklet, or answer form "Only write the essay in pencil."

Sorry, I mistyped in my last post.

It does not state anywhere NOT to use a pen, even on the SAT on CB's website. The Barron's book had pens listed as materials needed for the test, and later in the book the author stated that the essay was to be written in pen.

AroW, yes, that is the only place on the test where it says to use pencil. Because of the placement of it (on the first sheet for information, such as name, test code, etc.) one would assume, it applies to that certain area. It is written in the upper right hand corner, in small print, right above box #1, in which one would put his/her name. It does not say to write the essay in pencil.

They should have stated in bold writing that the essay was to be written in pencil. Whether on the prompt or the actual paper for the essay, and possibly on both.

Meh to CB.

i would like to read your essay, would you fax or mail me a copy?

Does anybody know when we will get our essay scores, for those of us who have written in pen?

dustrycrow--we dont get the essay back yet
