what is 4 wrong…

@IceQube
The question was something like: “Its furnishings and chandeliers make the room larger than it actually is.” There didn’t appear to be any problem with the sentence.

Also, do you know how the essay tends to affect the writing curve? Is there just a marginal difference between an essay that scores 10, 11, or 12?

Okay thankss.
@russgenious, the error is in “its” i believe. Its an empty pronoun. I remember at my sat prep place seeing few questions where the error was due to the emptiness.
Plus, thats like saying
“her skirt makes the girl look pretty”. Thats awkward and not right.

@lalala321
Typically 740-760

@Imperviouss
I’m too lazy to type out the article, but that wasn’t an empty pronoun.
Here’s the reasoning: http://i.imgur.com/IM0Nd.png

If the sentence to correct was “Her skirt makes the girl look pretty.”, it wouldn’t be correctable in the sense that changing one underlined portion would completely fix the sentence. Your analogy isn’t really valid.

okay maybe it is no error darn :(

Does anyone know the number of questions you can miss in order to get a 690+ with a decent essay probably around a 10?

"If the sentence to correct was “Her skirt makes the girl look pretty.”, it wouldn’t be correctable in the sense that changing one underlined portion would completely fix the sentence. Your analogy isn’t really valid. "

How about changing “Her” to “The.” Actually that sounds slightly awkward, but it works for the actual question.

“The furnishings and chandeliers make the room larger than it actually is.”

A 12 essay allows you to miss 1 or 2 writing questions and still get a 800. A 10 is pushing the 800 envelope; to get an 800 with a 10 essay, you had better miss no m/c questions. A 9 may result in a 800 if you are extremely extremely lucky.

I got a 800 with a 10 essay. Fortunately, I had missed no m/c questions. Most curves make getting an 800 with a 9 essay impossible.

@Everyone Stressing About the “Its” Question

The sentence was closer to…

“Its glittering chandeliers and mirrored-walls make the room appear larger than it actually is.”

I chose “Its” personally because it was ambiguous and read awkwardly. But now we get to wait a few weeks and toil under the crushing pressue this issue.

@ Seriwe. DAMN IT. You’re right. “Its” is totally ambiguous in that it could be referring to the room or some other unknown exophoric entity or thing. And according to Silverturtle’s Grammar Guide exophora is always incorrect. GAH. That’s -1 for Writing so far haha.

And what was the puffin one. Was it “most enjoyed to see” or “most enjoyed seeing”??

Also, for a question in the food coloring paragraph improvement section, was it “otherwise” or “more or less” ???

The only question that I have trouble accepting is the island mountain one.

______ in something island, (some descriptive phrase about the island), one is confronted with the looming mountains in the distance.

I remember that this is EXACTLY how it read, the “in” was there, and the third clause started out with a one.
is the answer
-Upon Arrival (I think it is)
-When Arriving
-When One arrives (I think the “one” being repeated makes this wrong)

I wanted to get this out there because people have been mis- transcribing the sentence, which would affect the discussion.

I believe you remembered the question wrong…
the second half of the sentence definitely began with Mount something
i remember it read something like …to Bora Bora, Mount __ is looming in the distance.
so the answer was “When one arrives” because any other option would create a misplaced modifier

what is -1 and a 9 or 10 essay?

what would 3 wrong with a 9 or 10 essay be?
I feel OK about my essay but I only used two examples-one historical, ww2, and I used a book (the diving bell and the butterfly)

happycat is right! 100% it was “When one arrives”. As for the people who keep saying that you can’t repeat “one” in a sentence, they are incorrect. One of the things they test us on is pronoun shifts…when you cannot use both “one” and “you” in the same sentence- you must you “one” and “one”. i have practice tests from my tutor and we went over this…also, we did a question exactly like the chandelier one where the sentence started with “Its”> That sentence was correct, as is the one we keep discussing, the clear antecedent for “its” is “room.” 100 % sure on that one, too.

Any chance that -1 and 10 essay will be an 800?

pinkro, unlikely but i sure hope so cuz im in the same situation that you are

The one about the house and “Its” is NO ERROR
“Its chandeliers and mirrors made the room look bigger than it actually is.”
“Its” refers to “room” the ONLY SINGULAR NOUN.
100% certain.
