marching band

Hi all
Any one know how hard it is to get into the marching band, and what kind of feeling is around the band, like more serious of a band or more fun
David

I think most people would say the band is very serious AND very fun.

Grcxx3 is a Blue Band mom; you could probably pm her with questions.

My son made the Blue Band this past fall. The audition (playing and marching) is pretty intense. He signed in and had his music audition on Tuesday, a group meeting Tuesday night, marching auditions/practice all day on Wed. By Wed night he was “pretty” sure that he had made it, but didn’t get the official word until Thursday morning. He was absolutely exhausted, but thrilled!

In addition to your own playing/marching ability, how “hard” it is to get in really depends on what instrument you play, how many returning members there are, and how many new kids are auditioning. I would recommend ordering a copy of the DVD - “Making of the Blue Band.” You can order it from the Blue Band website.

While I think the band definitely has a lot of fun, they do take it very seriously. In the fall, rehearsals are 4 days a week (3 afternoons, 1 evening) - and of course game days are pretty intense. Plus, there are all the parades, pep rallys, etc. But my son says there is NOTHING like marching into that giant stadium to the roaring crowd!

I’m also interested in auditioning for the Blue Band if I get accepted to University Park. A friend from my town who went to Penn State joined the Blue Band, and she says that it has been an amazing experience.

There are also Fall and Spring Pep Bands. They play primarily for the Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Basketball teams. There were several Saturdays when my son was up at 5:30am to get ready for a home football game, spent the day doing marching band/football stuff, was back in his dorm at 4 or 5 for a quick shower and change, then was off to a volleyball game. Pretty intense, but lots of fun.

The PSU Women’s Volleyball team will be playing tonight in an effort to capture their fourth consecutive NCAA championship.

Hi all
Thanks for all the replies, Do you know how early a perspective member can get the audition music? My son plays baritone and he would love to march in school.
Thanks
David

There isn’t any specific audition music. My son simply picked out a piece with his trumpet teacher and prepared it.

Here is some specifics that should help.
