Marijuana use in college

just wondering......how often do people in college smoke marijuana if not at all? ive always had the general impression that there was marijuana use at college but im not sure
i mean compared to my high school ( where i would say nearly 1/3 of the kids have tried it) what do you guys know about marijuana use in college?

It depends on the crowd you hang out with. For my group, nothing. We're all on scholarships, paying our own way, or have a LONG trek left (most of us are Ph.D, M.D. inclined, which equals about 10 more years of college).

****ing our brains up with pot? We can't afford that luxury, sorry.

That's like kids taking ecstasy. Even one time will screw you over.

"****ing our brains up with pot? We can't afford that luxury, sorry.

That's like kids taking ecstasy. Even one time will screw you over."

I think you're exaggerating a teensy bit.

It really depends on your school, the area, who you're around, etc. It definitely does not depend on your carrer plans or intelligence--of all of the colleges in my area (BU, BC, NU, MIT, Tufts, Suffolk, UMass, Harvard, etc.), everyone I've spoken to always says that MIT kids party the hardest. Can't say how accurate that is, but that's been our experience.

I have friends who smoke a couples days every week, but I have more friends who don't smoke at all. I don't think there's an easy way to answer your question.

yea i just wanted to hear from different people and experiences thanks

::I think you're exaggerating a teensy bit.::

Not really. It's proven that marijuana lowers your IQ.

hey mavin not really;
i found this article on the harvard website

Study: Intelligence, cognition unaffected by heavy marijuana use
<a href="http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2001/10.11/marijuana.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2001/10.11/marijuana.html</a></p>

And for all of you internet addicts out there, consider this:
<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/22/text.iq/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/22/text.iq/index.html</a></p>

Noone's trying to say it's the best thing that you can do. But it is certainly less harmful than alcohol or tobacco.

I can link numerous articles regarding marijuana's negative impact on IQ. Look at the last article posted, for example. According to that article, marijuana lowers your IQ. Just like I said.

And besides, read the article you posted: "The bad news, not included in the study, is that most heavy users admit that pot has had a negative effect on their physical and mental health as well their functioning on the job and socially."

Even IF marijuana does not impact IQ, there are still numerous other problems stemming from its use.

In regards to that article, though, I wonder how you "[monitor] the IQ of workers throughout the day." And that sentence implies that the IQ fluctuates, and thus that the change in IQ resulting from reading emails is temporary.

While of course the IQ impact from smoking maijuana is permanent.

The Harvard article also dealt with heavy users, being defined as people who smoke pot daily. That is much different than people who do it sparingly.

haha just because people go to competitive schools or are working towards a higher degree doesn't mean they're not going to smoke pot. a lot of kids at ivy leagues and top schools smoke and drink to relieve stress, even those who plan to get a PhD or MD. its debateable whether frequent use will lower you IQ or not but to h_thealogian, no, smoking pot one time will not screw you over.

at most colleges if you want to smoke, you can find it but its not going to be everywhere and its not a big deal. of course its different if you go to like brigham and young where there's none or like ucsc and bard where its more prevalent.. but in general no one cares if you smoke or not.

hmmmmm.....why is it that i know several people that smoke pot and continue to maintain 3.8-4.0 at top 20 schools?

I also hate how ppl refuse to acknowledge the fact that alcohol lowers your IQ significantly, and is alot more harmful to your brain than marijuana.

How many ppl have you heard of that died of a marijuana overdose or pot poisoning?...none :)...you must smoke approximately 2 pounds of marijuana in a short period of time to lethally overdose...which is impossible, because you'll fall asleep after AT MOST the first 2-4 ounces.

i had no idea that pot was even used at ivy leagues. i was always under the impression that really smart kids never touched that stuff

Even if they have a 4.0 GPA, that doesn't mean they couldn't be that much smarter if they didn't smoke marijuana.

And I never said alcohol doesn't have any corresponding problems. The discussion of this thread just happens to be marijuana.

weed is there if you want it no matter where you are. if you want to smoke, then you will, and if you dont you wont.

Just stay away from the stuff. It smells weird, it makes you act like an idiot, and you get on people's nerves.

Not to mention the big thing: It's illegal, and if your RA finds it, you could be expelled, depending on your school rules, even for the first time.

And in decent clubs, they WILL throw you out. Clubs generally don't like trafficking, at least if they're decent.

And I wasn't exaggerating. There are reports on significant IQ drops after smoking marijuana.

Don't even start me on ecstasy or any of the hard stuff. You take that, and you might as well kiss college--and quite possibly your brain--goodbye.

I think it really depends not only on who you're hanging around with, but also the college itself. Some schools, like Ithaca, Bard, New School of Florida, Hampshire, UVM, and Reed, are known for heavy marijuana use. At religious schools, women's colleges, and the Ivy League, use tends to be much less prevalent, generally speaking. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, because it does just about everywhere, but it's not as bad.

Oh, and I guess I should share: One of my best friends did an overnight at Amherst, and all her hosts did was light up all night. She didn't let it turn her away from the school, however, because she realized it was just two students and not representative of the entire student body. She's attending next year, Class of 2009. You have to keep things like that in mind when doing visits, especially overnights.

tinkerbell is right on the money.

h_thealogian:

I don't think anyone's advocating the use of anything--certainly not me, at least. I've never touched so much as a cigareete.

The point is that you seem to have some very unrealistic (and unsubstantiated) views on both drugs and drug users. I'll leave it at that, as I feel like we're deviating too much from the original poster's question.

shenobi_X:

Of course there are Ivy League students that take drugs: you'd be hard pressed to find any population where there wasn't at least some drug use. Even successful, intelligent people engage in risky behaviors (of all kinds, too!).

I had a friend who showed up to take the SAT's after smoking pot, and he got a 1420 or something. He re-took it another time, not after pot, and got a 1240 or something like that. It was a drastic difference.
