Marilee Jones, Dean of Admissions, has written a "guest blog entry" tonight, musing on the state of college admissions, resilience and initiations, and the wait for EA decisions. I found it very moving, insightful and wise, and exceedingly human. Perhaps some of you will find it helpful.

I saw that, and thought it an exceptional post. One thing I'm not sure they're considering (which I don't personally have a problem with, yet, anyway), is that because they're getting so much more personal with the students, it makes the rejection on the students that much harder. On the same coin, it makes acceptances much better, and the actual process a bit smoother, even though it does induce more anxiety. I suppose the greater good for the acceptees? I know they want it to be easy on all, please don't take this as an insinuation that they don't care for the ones they can't take...

I seem to have lost where this was going, so I'll let sleep take over now.

That is an incredible blog entry tying the perspectives of being a mother and being the dean of admissions. It also goes a long way in dispeling the notion that a lot of parents say, like "when I was your age, I had it a lot tougher than you kids." I think she does a great job in showing how different times have been and how much more pressure a student feels in school.

wow.

just, wow.

what pebbles said...im speechless. thank you so much marilee for writing this. it really moved me and made this whole application process much less harsh! =) X a billion now

its too long for me to read

Only Marilee knows ALL of your admission decisions and you don't.

I really appreciate the efforts by MIT community to get as close and personal with students; I don't think any other universities come even close. That long letter by Dean Jones really show that our applications were in good hands.
