I am not sure what you consider “oceanography.” Physical Oceanography speaks to the physics of ocean currents and other physical attributes of circulation and energy/gas/light budgets, etc. Marine biology on the other hand deals with organisms and life cycles, often by tracking low-end-of-the-food-chain organisms (e.g. Copepods). There is a lot of room in studying the ocean for you, whether it be geophysics or biology. I would suggest finding a source of inspiration (Sylvia Earle?) and reading up on her/him, then determining what skills and work settings would be fun. Use that to set a base for exploring schools.
