Marine Biology

I’ve heard good things about the marine biology programs at UCSB and UCSC. Which, between these two, or any other UC schools for that matter, has the best program?

I would think UCSD since that university is strongly associated with Scripps Institute of Oceanography, if not part of the university. A quick look at this:

[Scripps Institution of Oceanography](http://sioundergrad.ucsd.edu/)

leads me to believe there is a strong undergraduate marine biology program based on this institute, or at least a strong supplement to undergraduate education from UCSD.

I know they have a good graduate program for marine biology, but idk about undergrad. I’ll check into it. I’m pretty sure I can get into UCSD if I want to, but it’s too close to home (I live in San Diego). I know I shouldn’t base my decision on that, and I won’t if it really comes down to it, I just want to look at possible programs that are good at other schools :). Thanks!

UCSD only offers a minor in marine biology.

^ I know, I looked.
Do you know if they offer a biology program with emphasis in marine bio?

For undergrad you don’t really need to specialize in marine bio. You’re better off majoring in something like biology or chemistry and later focus on the marine aspect in grad school. That way you can start off with a broad education and not get specific too early.

Even schools like UCLA and Cal will offer programs in marine biology. Cal, for example has a research base in French Polynesia that takes around 20 students each fall semester to do research there.

My advice: pick the school that you like the best overall; don’t just pick a school based on your intended major.

UCSB is nice for marine bio because… well, it’s on the beach. We also have our own lagoon. I’m sure there would be a lot of hands-on experience, and it’d be pretty damn convenient.
