My son is interested in the Marines. Does anyone know if having the thyroid removed is a disqualification? According to the DOD standards, hypothyroidism uncontrolled by medication is a disqualification. I presume that having the thyroid removed is an extreme case of hypothyroidism, and his is controlled by medication.

According to the recruiter, if my son wanted to enlist, he would have to pass the 92 day bootcamp without medication. That would be impossible in his case. However, the DOD standards seem to be a little more relaxed, and the recruiter did not know what the medical standard would be for officers.

Thanks.

Go to this link ... United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin

And look on the USNA DoDMERB forum. They'll be very helpful and informative.

Thanks for the link

A page out of the most current online version of USNA's catalog also has information. Try this link: (see page 12 of the 13 in this particular section. http://www.usna.edu/Catalog/BroadBand/2007-2008organizationbb.pdf
Otherwise, go to usna.edu, then on the left click "admissions", and on the far right of that page, click "catalog", and in the last set of pages you can click on regular or broadband and pull up the online pages on section A: Medical Considerations (or some wording similar). good luck with it.
