We just sent the completed package (application, essay, official transcripts, and recommendations) for my daughter to attend the Marist Summer Criminal Justice Institute. We're now waiting to see if she's accepted ... I'm sure she will be. They have diversified field trips and some study plus she earns 3 credits in their Intro to Criminal Justice. Sounds like a great experience that will help solidify her desire to major in criminal justice (with a dual in psychology). Plus, she wants to attend school out of state (we live in Phoenix, AZ) and going to New York and living in the dorms will be a fantastic experience.

Has anybody attended any of the Marist Summer Institute programs?

My son did the sports communication program at Marist last summer. It was an amazing experience for him. They hopped the train to New York City with the department chairman and he took them to CBS Sports for a tour with an alumni at 30 Rock and then they went to a Yankees game. That was all included in the tuition. The train station is close by. The course work was rigorous and they had a lot of fun. It was a nice test for me to see how he would do living away, he was just fine. It was very safe. They all stay in touch and there were people there from the east coast, west coast, and inbetween.

The criminal justice program has them going to NYPD, Secret Service, ATF, local and state police depts, District Attny’s, and various court systems. In fact, I think they also visit a correctional facility … that should be interesting for her. Also, they visit the Police Academy training. It does sound great!!

Good to know that it was safe. And I agree, it’s a great test to see if they are ready to live away from home (this will be my daughters first real time away from any familiy) … maybe she doesn’t like it. NY is a long way from Phoenix.

Have you ever been to New York state? Greater Poughkeepsie is very rural, it really has a lot of farms on the outskirts. Poughkeepsie itself on route 9 is a college town, so there are chain restaurants and malls. But one would call it “cow country”. When people envision New York, they think of Manhattan. It is very pretty on the Hudson River.

agree with gopats. hudson valley is a great area and there is tons of things to do such as historical sites, and maybe they will let them do the walkway on the hudson on the weekend. poughkeepsie is upstate ny for those who think of nyc as all of ny but really it is only an hour and a half north of the city and not northern ny at all

I’ve been to NY but only in the bigger cities. One of the many issues we have to work through is does she want urban or rural? I know she wants to be near a body of water (lake, river, ocean) but that might just be in Arizona in her talking. Another issue we are working through is small, medium or large college, though she said this is not as much an issue as urban versus rural discussion we have. Thanks for the feedback.

Well, my daughter just got the “acceptance” call on Friday and I can’t tell you how excited she is. I know they have kids jump through a few screening hoops so that only kids taking their education seriously get invited (I feel her acceptance was never in doubt), it sure was great to see her excited. It helps her know that her work is paying off and it will motivate her for the next couple of years, which is when the real acceptance letters start coming.

Would this program be appropriate for a C+ B- student. My son is still undecided about what to major in so we can’t decide between business or sport mgmt. Also, is anyone familiar with the amount of classroom support? What if you have a 504 with extra time at HS? Thanks.

nymulk - we had everthing faxed in and then followed it up by mailing hard copies. Once they received all the faxes they CALLED my daughter within 3-4 days … it was pretty quick.

CatnPhx- Criminal Justice. I plan on majoring in criminal justice in any college that i go to. The summer program video looked like i would enjoy it and learn about CJ and policing

nymulk - Cool … you’ll see my daughter there too. She is pretty excited to attend. In the mail last week, we just received a bill that said we needed to lock in the program by paying a $400 non-refundable deposit and then they’ll send us the details of the program. I’ll be paying it this week.

I hope you guys have fun … sounds like an absolutely great program.

CatnPhx- Thanks for all the info. Im looking foward to experincing dorm life and living away for two weeks. Have you been to Marist? Info session and tour?

nymulk - we’ve been on no tours yet. My daughter will be a Junior next year so we’ll spend some time figuring out the final list of where she wants to go. When I showed her the program she was very interested and then got real excited when she saw the campus (via the computer) … it looks beautiful and just what she wants. Being from AZ, we don’t get the trees and water that she seems to be seeking but she’ll get that at Marist this summer. It will be a good point of reference for her when we start going on tours.
