Marist, Fordham, Loyola, Scranton??

Son applied to 12 schools and narrowed choices down to Fordham, Loyola, Scranton and Marist. S plans on studying business and after school believes he'll be staying in the NYC metro area. Fordham and Loyola have slight edge and cost may be a factor.
Looking at what the schools have to offer in terms of
1- quality of business programs
2- quality of overall education
3- job placement/networking
4- social life
5- overall college experience

son attends all boys catholic HS, good student (3.8gpa), athlete, easy going and Type B personality.

My D wasn’t accepted to Marist. We visited NYC and she also had a tour at Fordham. Even though she loves NYC, she didn’t feel that Fordham would give her the college experience she craves.

Sorry I meant to say my daughter was accepted to Marist:)

I can speak to you in terms of Marist and Fordham:

Fordham has amazing opportunities, but the quality of students is more top notch there than at Marist, making competition fierce! The school is also notoriously known for grade deflation, but it expected to be one of the country’s most prestigious university by the end of the decade. However, while the campus is beautiful, the sorrounding area is VERY ghetto, so let’s just say your son shouldnt be venturing off campus too much

Marist College should also give you amazing opportunities and a good campus but academics is a hit or miss. From what I’ve read, either they’ll be challenging and really life altering or easier than high school, but I guess that’s just anywhere. Marist College is also climbing in ranks recently, especially in the business arena. I feel that this school had more school spirit when I visited and a really tight knit group of people.

If I were to pick between the two schools, I would go with Fordham, but that’s if I was planning to stay on campus. Also, the school has amazing intership opportunities in fields ranging from PreLaw to Women Studies! There’s a more diverse and eclectic group of people, mindsets, and attitudes there!

I have a child at Fordham and I live near Marist. Although Fordham is in the Bronx, it is a very safe campus with amazing opportunities in NYC. Marist is located on the Hudson river with a beautiful view and a 2 hour travel time to NYC. Both schools offer the traditional college experience. My child at Fordham did not apply to Marist, my next child is very interested in Marist.

There have been instances of Marist students getting mugged while just off campus, pehaps the idyllic setting lulls them into a false sense of security. At Fordham, students routinely go off campus for local shopping, dining and to catch the train to Manhattan.

Both colleges are good schools, it ultimately depends on which one is the right fit for your child.

My son was accepted to both schools and he picked Marist hands down. When you compare the net cost, the decision for us his parents was easy and that went to Marist too. Both my parents got advanced degrees at Fordham so I am well aware of the quality of the school; that has been true historically. The impressive thing about Marist is the improvements they have made over the past 20 years both in Physical Plant as well as in reputation.
My son also got into Binghamton, Pitt, Lafayette,American, Drexel and UConn and chose Marist because on an overall basis it was the best fit for him: I could not be happier with his decision! There is no best school, there is only a best school for each individual.

good feedback. Son has also been accepted Binghamton and many reputatble privates. With cost of attendance (COA) a consideration Fordham and Loyola has been ruled out. Looks like Scranton has edged out Marist. Liked Marist very much but thought Scranton was a better fit for him…

Congratulations, fit is the most important consideration. Best of luck to him and to you.

I have 1 in Scranton & my 2nd one is torn between that and Marist. I can help with info on Scranton, can anyone give the good & bad at Marist?

vistedMarist 2x. S liked and has 3 friends going. Many more were waitlisted as got many more apps this year. Marist good for computer science, business, communications. There may be others but that is what I am aware of. Campus is scenic and on Hudson, students friendly, got full spectrum of sports but school sprit is marginal. Best known team is womens basketball, which has done well on national level. Check threads on CC, student review and college Prxxler as well. (CC blocking the P. word) Most reviews are very positive. Best I can give you lettielou. BTW, S went with Scranton. Felt it had best fit and vibe for him.

Agree with all of those positive comments; really have no negative about the school. They are investing in the physical plant of the school and in improving its reputation over time such that it is now considered in the conversation with other top-notch schools. The thing that swung it for my son is that as an athlete he wanted to got to a Division 1 school and Marist “felt” like the right place for him.

I agree fit is different for everyone. My son is between Marist, Scranton & Fordham( rec’d no housing). looking for all opinions

Unless your committed to comuting at Fordham, that is a BIG problem. If Fordham very desired school for you get on the horn asap to find out if you can get housing.
