Depends. USMMA is the federal academy - as such, it is considered the equivalent of the Armed Services Academies (West Point, Naval, etc.) Almost free, Very tough curriculum - only 65-70% survive - similar for the US Coast Guard Academy - go over to the service academy forum - lots posted there. Significant post graduate duty required.
The State Maritime Academies are also supported by the Feds, to a much lesser degree, as well as their states. In the scheme of things, SUNY NY was the FIRST maritime academy (much rivalry with KP) and is the biggest and probably the best. The other state academies have excellent programs and serve as "regional" academies - so that you may get in-state tuition, for example, if you go to the one designated for your state, i.e. Oregon for California Maritime, etc. All students who are in the "regiment" and sign up for the Naval Reserves/Merchant Marine reserves, get a small stipend to offset school expenses. Good luck - I usually check in the service academy forum, but just picked this up on a random search - try posting in service academy parents or USMMA or Coast Guard forums.

Several months ago a poster who is a SUNY Maritime alumnus wrote about the apparently very unhappy and difficult time his daughter experienced at his alma mater. Search CC.

LakeWashington - can't find what you are referring to via search. I am concerned that your comments, hanging out there like this, seem like a uncorraborated & unnecessary slam. Please find the post and put in link if you think a dig is appropriate.
