I'm currently set to go to Syracuse this fall to study marketing in the Whitman School. However, I've recently seen alot of posts that have led me to question the credibility of a marketing major. Is majoring in marketing worth anything? I'm looking get into the business side of the fashion industry and thought marketing would possibly help lead me there. Am I completely wrong about this? I really need some insight as I truly want to make the most of my college education and really hope to end up in a career where I am happy. I really hope to hear back from you guys I'm just really stressed over this.

I am currently a maketing major (3rd year) and I intern for a major fashion company. To be honest, many of the individuals in the marketing department are not even marketing majors. Many are communications or even english. I believe I am the only one in the department that studied marketing. Marketing does not require an actual skill say like a computer programmer. As long as you are creative, well spoken, and excel at writing you will be successful in marketing. After interning, I am thinking of switching my major because marketing is really cut-throat there is no job stability. I have seen people in my company get cut from left to right. Due to the economy-- companies are trying to downsize and combine job descriptions. Therefore, if you combine say marketing and finance or marketing or accounting it would make you more competative and you can perform different tasks. This may not be 100% factual for all companies though, mine might be a bit more intense because we are a major clothing line. I don’t mean to scare you- I just wish someone gave me real insight when I was chosing my major but everyone is different. You have ALOT of time to decide. I suggest finding an internship your sophmore year to test out if you like it or not. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the reply it really does help. My school has dual degree program so I could possibly double major in a business category along with another major from Newhouse (maybe pubic relations? I don’t really know how that major is perceived either). My final concern is pretty simple though, how is a business degree looked on in the fashion industry? For example, would i still be able to cross over into the fashion world without a degree in business or does a business degree help?
