Marketing=valuable major?

Is marketing considered a valuable major? I'm considering a major in it, but fear that it may seem like a ditzy, non-intellectual major. Would double majoring in a liberal arts subject be enticing to future employers? I just really like the way how I could move across various fields doing marketing.

[YouTube - Bill Hicks on Marketing](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDW_Hj2K0wo)

Back it up with something solid like econ, math, or finance.

I don’t fully understand your point about moving across fields, as you can do the same thing in finance, accounting, and IT. If you want to do marketing, then a marketing degree makes sense. I would just make sure that marketing majors from your school get decent marketing jobs. I don’t believe a 2nd major will help you land marketing jobs.

If you aren’t sure of what you want to do, then a degree which provides more quantitative or technical skills is generally of more value. On that note, there is also the option of going back to school for your MBA and then moving into a higher paying marketing position.

is it possible to double major in marketing and international business?

If your school has both programs then probably yes.

I’m an Economics major and I’m a Marketing intern for a video game company. I also have Econ friends doing Marketing internships for other companies as well.

I’m going to have to argue that my Econ major has not held me back at all from going into marketing. Not only that, I have options in other fields open to me if I so choose. I don’t think a marketing major will have the same ability to move across fields.

Do the marketing research track if they have one. More technical and pays better after school.

non-intellectual ? lol

marketing is a nice major. It is not only about advertisement, but it goes much deeper, it involves core corporate strategies, researching changes in markets, even psychology of consumers. A good marketing department can make a company very successful. It has many aspects.

Just like with anything, if you think you’re good at marketing, and you really love it, then you should go for it. Marketing is very interesting, and if you do very well, there are of course many job prospects. The question is : Do you want to be a marketer ?

Nonetheless, if you’d like to do more, then you might consider a double major with finance or something.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it really is helpful. I’m definitely considering a double major with a liberal arts major. I really like sociology and think the research skills could be helpful, as would something like economics or psychology, which would allow me to translate my skills into other fields. While I’m really interested in marketing, advertising, and communications, I love learning about the theoretical side to it and the psychological/developmental implications.

It just gets stressful thinking about what to major in with the economy like this, and knowing so many brilliant recent-grads who have had 0 job offers in very lucrative fields. Guess it’s all the more reason to just study what I’m interested in and go wholeheartedly after it.
