Marketing

I have always wanted to study marketing in college. However, looking at the past threads and researching, it seems that ppl consider marketing as the "easy business major", and would rather choose to study accountancy or finance.

Since I really want to study marketing, I am thinking about double majoring in marketing and another business major. Would accountancy be a better choice or would finance be a better choice. And furthermore, what are some general thoughts about marketing? Any comments would be greatly appreciated :D

Instead of double majoring in two of the business-majors, I suggest double majoring Marketing with sociology field, with Psychology being the best because lots of marketing duties get to do with dealing with people.

+1 to above post.

marketing and accounting or finance are totally unrelated, and they won't seem to help each other at all.

as for me, i'm considering international business and marketing. (or international business and finance)

Cherry, if marketing is what interests you, major in marketing and pursue a career in marketing. Don't get on the finance train if that is not what you want to be doing. It doesn't matter which major is "easier" in someone's eyes, what matters is that you are doing something that you are genuinely interested in (the same can be said for the job world).

Marketing + Finance + a little related work experience ... could make you a more desirable marketing manager.

I did marketing and international business. I started the corporate finance between those other two majors. Trust me, marketing is not an easy major. Jobs are just a cutthroat like in financial industry and pay can be extremely rewarding depending on what position you're looking for (although in terms of salary, doesn't trump ibanking).

I'll be a marketing major. A lot of people look down at us as the 'stupid business majors' or whatever. Forget that. Do what you want to do. I know I am.

I might double with Int'l business though.

My sister will be a senior at ASU, marketing major, and she has landed some great jobs and internships specifically geared for marketing majors.

thank u everyone. all of this has rly helped me alot!

Are you a junior?

Cherryblossom - you're not from the US, are you? Just curious.

no, im a senior.

AND

no, im not from the states

where are you going next yr?

Take what people have to say about finance and accounting with a grain of salt. If you really like marketing, and if you've really got a passion for it, definetly stick with it. I have a copule of cousins who majored in F and A, one is with a Big4 firm, other is with BB firm (think GS, ML), looking to go into PE. They both did it because all of their friends were doing the same and had basically hyped it up. I spoke with them a couple weeks ago and they both really seemed to hate their jobs, esp. the one in accounting. She said it was boring, and the people that she worked with, and the work itself, was absolutely dull. She didn't like it in the first place, which is probably the reason she seems to hate it.

Just major in something you like, and I think somebody said it already, but Marketing/Pscyhology or Sociology is great, but Marketing alone should suffice.

ahh this thread is so encouraging =)

loslobos71 , I'll be heading off to notre dame (IN) in fall!

No comment. Hope you enjoy it though.

Just a note . . . plenty of people who go into marketing and who become quite successful at it never studied marketing in college at all. So, if marketing is an interest of yours but you're unsure about the major, you can take some marketing classes without majoring in marketing and still find a position in marketing.

I took a college honors marketing class last summer and really enjoyed it. Unless I change to advertising or General Management, I'll be a marketing major next yr.

Sally, that's very true. There's so many different areas under the field of marketing that a job could require a multitude of skills. Like in PR, writing skills are key so if you doubled up in mktg and journalism that could be a killer combo. Or if you work in creative advertising, graphic design, list goes on...
If you want to major in MKTG you should spend some time online or in the career center to figure out which area you are interested in.
