my friend applied to the smith school and put econ as his second choice. when he got accepted, he was placed in the college of division of letters and sciences. he then called umd and asked to be an econ major, and be put into the college of behavioral and social sciences, but a few days later, it said he was invited to markets and society.

we've been reading about it, and which is better, markets and society, or economics? he wants to get into the smith school as soon as possible, so would M&S benefit him more? also, can he still get into the QUEST program?

thanks so much for your help! :o)

we were talking about markets and society in the other thread. It is only for students in the college of letters and sciences. Is econ a major of the college of behavioral and social sciences? If so I wouldn't know what would get him into Smith with a better chance. I think the markets and society thing might help because those are kids that were not accepted to Smith who are interested in Business. It could show a dedication to business that started early...

You said as soon as possible for your friend. The thing is you must be a junior to apply to smith if you are not accepted as a freshman. It sucks, i know, my friend really is in the same deal and wants in. I'll try to find the links to the other threads where this was discussed.

As far as QUEST i really doubt it. my understanding is it is for outstanding smith students. But definatly ask lindsey in the other thread, she is in it. She started in honors and then got into QUEST. Tell your friend good luck! HE can still major in what he wants but just not now.

I would take the markets and society because it will be a group of people that want the same thing... Is it impossible to do both?? Unless your friend really wants to be an econ major i would take those classes. Even though it shows an interest in business he might take classes that may be useless. I would take the undecided classes which I guess will be CORE classes coupled with the markets and society program and I think he is basically garanteed a spot as long as he pulls a B average.

hey, yeah i read those other threads and i actually replied to some. i knew about the program, i just wasn't sure which one was better--M&S or an econ major..thanks for your reply, though. i think he'll go for M&S. as for transferring into the smith school...REALLY hope there's a chance (even if it's a tiny chance) that he can transfer earlier than junior year!

o, i didn't realize it was you. I just read the post. yah you responded to most of those other threads. But I would do the markets and society but really I am just guessing. I don't know what would be better... The markets and society seems to be something that people who want business can use to prepare themselves for smith. It looks to be geared towards getting a degree in business from smith...

alright that's what i figured..i'll tell him to go forth with M&S..i was just afraid it wasn't "qualified" because it was relaly part of a school that helps undecided majors, while he's pretty much decided on accounting/business. but yeah, i think M&S might be the better program for him. thanks!

yup, I would wait for other opinions though. I might think i know everything but that isn't always true. :D I know you are going on Friday, Is your friend going to?? If so have him ask a counceler.

If you knew he would get above a 3.0 I would say definatly MandS but if that doesn't happen he might be out of a major and that is where having a major in econ might be helpful. That is about the only positive I see...

hmm yeah i'm pretty sure he'll get a 3.0...he's not going friday, i think he's going april 7th..but thanks for the help!

awwwwww cheapseats, thanks for mentioning me!! wow, i really feel special right now. grin

in order to get into QUEST you need to be in the business school, and in order to get into the business school you have to complete 2-3 semesters of prerequisites. so whiskers, your friend probably wouldn't be able to do QUEST.

and just FYI, honors has nothing to do with QUEST....i'm still in honors and the two are completely separate.

oh and i agree with markets & society over majoring in economics.
