what makes Markley the party dorm?

The Freshman.

Honestly, I hate freshman. yeah, i was a freshman myself last year but I hated my lot. They're so freaking immature!!!! grr.

But theres other dorms that are majority freshman. What makes markley different?

I think it just has a reputation for being a party dorm. I'm sure other dorms that have a majority of freshman are also considered the party dorms (except South Quad, which houses a lot of honors kids aka the more studious types and less of the party animals). I'm just saying this from what I've heard from different people. I'll find out more when I get there.

I was at PSU my freshman year and this dorm (East Halls) is known as the party dorm because only freshman live there. However, this doesn't mean other dorms aren't party dorms. The fact that most freshman live in East coupled with a few alcohol related incidents that have occured there give East halls the party dorm reputation. I suppose something similar at Markley gives it a party dorm reputation.

Actually, I have heard that South Quad Honors housing has the highest MIP rate on campus. Many of the kids are just out of control as they are now free from mom and dad.

Markley is a party dorm for sure though. I'll post some stories in a while. Otherwise just look in the Michigan Daily Crime Notes for some of the comical things that can happen.

Id definitely wanna read those stories whenever you could post them

Do you have a link to the Michigan Dail;y Crime Notes...I couldnt find anything.

yea i looked too and couldn't find it

whats the difference between a double and a triple other than the obvious number of occupants. i.e bathrooms, sitting rooms, etc.

There aren't bathrooms or sitting rooms in doubles or triples or any rooms in Markley/South Quad/etc. type dorms.

I checked out the virtual tour of the markley triple and it looks like the triple has a bathroom.

Oh, my bad. Very odd. Well, none of the South Quad dorms I've seen have bathrooms.

I'm pretty sure that none of the Markley rooms have a bathroom. There are South Quad triples with bathrooms though, one of my friends from high school had one. But I don't think freshmen are assigned to these rooms as they are usually taken by upperclassmen in the room selection process.

Markley does have one quadruple on each floor of each wing. Four kids in the room, one pretty big room and one smaller room. What usually happens is all of the beds go into the smaller room and the big room is used as more of a social room with all of the computers, couches, tvs, etc. This would be a pretty good room to have since there's so much space, a lot of room for gathering your friends over.

Its called a triple apartment at Markley and it looks like theres a bathroom to me. http://www.housing.umich.edu/residencehalls/index.php?hall=markley&hallname=Mary%20Markley%20Hall&virtual=MarkleyTripleRoom&virtualname=Mary%20Markley%20Triple%20Apartment

Ok, that is Markley. That looks like the quadruple I had just talked about. Didn't know they also have bathrooms. (Some might, some might not, I don't know.)

Even so, Markley has two wings connected by a lobby area hosting most of the common things for the building (cafeteria, computer lab, hideaway, study rooms, etc.) Each wing has about 70 rooms on a floor. On each floor, I think there are is only one (might be two) of these rooms. The rest are doubles. So probably something like 90-95% of the rooms are doubles. I wouldn't count on getting anything else.

Also, those apartment rooms are quite popular because of the amount of space...kids like to take the doors off the jam and set up beer pong tables.

dsmo, where did you get your information about South Quad honors havings the highest MIP? On the face of it, it seems a little far-fetched. Since honors housing is just few floors in SQ, are you telling us that someone tracks MIP by dorm AND floor? Sounds like urban legend to me, but if not I'd love to see the source.

i think he means south quad in general

As someone who was an RA at Markley for the last year and just graduated, here's the best answer you'll get:

Markley is quite possibly the worst dorm in the entire university. The rooms are tiny. The facilities are very lacking. It's got virtually no personality at all. It's a far walk from central campus which is where all your classes will be, and trust me, you will hate this in winter.

Michigan talks a lot about diversity, and if this something you're looking forward to, you're definitely gonna hate Markley. It is pretty much completely filled with whites, a large number of whom are filthy rich. There's a decent number of american-asians, and you can pretty much count the number of internationals/under-represented minorities living there.

It is also an unofficial freshman dorm. Almost every non freshman you'll meet there will be an RA. If you're looking to "grow," Markley's a bad place to be. You're not gonna know what college is really like because every friend you'll make there just came out of HS and is in the same position as you. Because no one really knows what to do in college/what clubs to join, most people start thinking that there isn't anything to do in college except sleep, study and party.

Finally, here's the good part: it's gonna be a lot of fun. Everyone else there is a freshman too, so you'll get to make a lot of friends. Partying excessively is the closest thing to a personality that Markley has; there're going to be tons of people pre-gaming in their rooms and partying every thursday, friday, saturday, so if you're into that, you'll have a lot of fun. Living in Markley is pretty much like being in high school for another year... without any parents. If all you want is to make some friends and have fun, you'll probably like it. If you're looking for more, Markley's not the place for you.

"Actually, I have heard that South Quad Honors housing has the highest MIP rate on campus"

It seemed pretty clear that it was specifically Honors, but I could be wrong.
