First off I would like to make it clear that I have already decided Marquette is where i want to go.
I am very interested in engineering and biology so naturally I am really interested in biomedical engineering at Marquette. It is exactly the degree I want and the field I would like to work in someday. However, I have recently done some research and heard that BME is a very broad field and it can be tough to find a job after college. So, what I am asking is, would i be better off going into BME or following a more traditional field like mechanical engineering? Also, if i did ME could I still get a job in the same industry that a BME would most likely work in?

Yes, you’re better off with a MechE degree…maybe with some add’l bio classes.

Yes you can work in the BioMedE industry with a MechE degree. That industry employs ChemE, MechE, etc majors.

That said, that industry sometimes expects a grad degree.

As for Marquette, a very fine school… Have you run the Net Price Calculators to make sure its affordable? have your parents agreed to pay? If so, then super. If not, then your desire to go there won’t be enough to pay the bills.

MechE has much better job prospects in general than BME. If you’re on the fence, I would say go with Mechanical.

Thanks for the replies. Money won’t be a problem. Does anyone familiar with marquette know if BME’s and or ME’s are getting job offers right out if school?

I’m an '83 Eng. alumnus. My S graduated last May and had several job offers 2 months before graduation. He is an EE and most of his Eng. friends got jobs, many as my S decided to stay in the Milwaukee area. Lots of demand for engineers in the area, and they seem to heavily recruit MU graduates (2 others from my S’s class got jobs at the same company and they were made a team within the company). Regarding your majors many BME’s go to graduate school into medical fields or do R & D. If you want to work right away ME degree is probably better. But the first year you take all basic courses and it would be easy to transfer between engineering departments and still finish within 4 years. If you have any other questions about MU lmk.

Thanks for the insight newsdrms. I am definitely leaning towards mechanical engineering now. One last question how does Marquettes ME program compare to the BME program is it any better or worse?

Better or worse with regards to? If you mean ranking wise from a national perspective BME is probably the best regarded, mainly because Marquette was one of the first to offer a BME degree. But overall the Engineering programs are very solid at MU. MU is not a big research institution and that is major factor in national rankings. Like I said previously your first year in the college of engineering the General Eng. course will give you a good overview of the programs.
