Hay, sorry for the lack of a better name, but I was wondering how dominate the drinking/party scene is at Marquette vs. Let's say SLU, for I'm not big on the parting and was wondering if someone can still fit in without ever drinking alcohol. Another issue, the weather and is there really foul smells from the ocean during the summer? And have the crucifixes in the classroom ever been an issue to students? I really want to know what school would fit me better or if there is a non-Jesuit school that can fulfill the same academic needs. Thanks so much this will really help.

You can have partying /driking or completly avoid it at Marquette. You will find that you can make friends wether you want to party / drink or not. There are lots of activities on campus and around the city of Milwaukee that do not involve partying or drinking. There is no ocean in Milwaukee, just lake Michigan, so no ocean smell. Regarding crucifixes you are not forced religion while attending Marquette. I have never heard of a problem regarding religion at Marquette. As I have recommended to others at this site if you have not made a visit try to arrange an overnight visit with an attending student. Marquette “shadow” program (overnight stay) is a great opportunity for any prospective student to see if Marquette would be a fit. Good luck!

Do you attend Marquette or used too? Jw yo

I am an alumnus (Eng. '83). My S is a sophomore in Eng.

O wow that is really cool. Im defiantly considering an overnight visit to see if it would be chill. The new engineer building is always a plus. What was your major and why did you pick Marquette over others? If I may ask

I’m a Civil Engineer. Well back in '79 it was not easy to go visit schools, there was no internet (at least for the civilans - LOL). I was attending a high profile prep. boarding school in Mass. (so I was sort of by myself). Best schools I got accepted to Purdue (jan. admission), Georgia Tech (acceptance for the following year - weird I know), Marquette (regular adm. & talked to a sophomore from my home town who was attending). So basically I did not want to wait and the person I talked to was very happy at Marquette (knew a lot about Ga. Tech. my uncle is an alumnus). Never regreted my decision. The new building is going to be excellent and phase I will be ready fall of '11! If you decide to go do not select McCormick as your dorm since it would be loud and lots of parties.

Hey newsdrms. You seem to have a wealth of knowledge about Marquette and I’m having a hard time deciding between SLU, Marquette and Duquesne. I have been accepted also to BU and NEU, but they offered very little Merit and they are way too expensive. I have been accepted to all of the 6-year Doctorate of Physical Therapy programs (that’s why I applied to these schools). Also I wanted schools with a campus, but in an urban environment, not too big, but not small either.

All three schools fit my criteria, they offered very similar Merit $, and I was accepted in the Honors College (still waiting for official letter from Marquette, but was told I would be happy when I received it – so I guess that was an unofficial acceptance) of all three colleges. I visited all three and really liked them. I visited Duquesne a second time for the Admitted Students Day and really liked the professors in the PT program and how they fit Study Abroad into the program. I am flying to SLU for their Admitted Students day on April 9th and flying out of St. Louis directly to Milwaukee for their Admitted students day on April 10th with a stay over with a student.

All three colleges are known for their 6-year freshman entry DPT program. All have a 100% pass rate on the licensing exam with 100% job placement. Coming from Florida, they are all cold cities (maybe Milwaukee is a bit colder). As you can see, they are very similar, so it makes my decision very hard, especially when I do not know many people that have attended any of these colleges.

Can you give my any insight to these colleges? Also, I love an urban environment because I love city life; museums, concerts, shopping in vintage shops, neat restaurants that aren’t franchises, community service opportunities, etc. I’m not a big party girl, but still love to dance and go to parties but don’t want Greek life to be my only option on the weekends.

Help!!!

Hi! erp1821, well my knowledge comes from my experience between ’79-’83 and now my S attending. Well we are from P.R. so cold weather got some time to get used to. One thing you have to remember is that no place will be perfect. I can really only help you with Marquette as I do not know enough about the other schools. I do know that BU is extremely expensive. My D now a freshman at Emerson College in Boston and had applied to BU also. Marquette party atmosphere can be as much or as little as you want to make it. That being said you do not want to live in McCormick huge dorm gets too wild. If you get into the honors program Starz could be a good choice although it is farther away. But that is about 3 blocks away, at Marquette nothing is much farther than 4 blocks. Milwaukee has amazing museums go to this site [Museums in Milwaukee - Learn about Milwaukee’s many different museums](http://milwaukee.about.com/od/museums/Museums.htm). Concerts - you will get a lot of the big name bands that go to Chicago will make their way to Milwaukee’s Bradley center where the men’s basketball team plays. Lots of Indie bands play at the Rave near campus. When I took my S to see Marquette I was surprised because I use to see a lot of the indie bands there (’79-’83) - [The Rave/Eagles Club/Eagles Ballroom - Milwaukee, WI [Milwaukee concerts, Internet presales, concert tickets, concert photos, live music, Wedding hall, special events ]](<a href=“The Rave/Eagles Club/The Eagles Ballroom - 404 - Page Not Found”>The Rave/Eagles Club/The Eagles Ballroom - Milwaukee, WI - Official Website [Milwaukee concerts, Milwaukee shows, concert tickets, Internet presales, concert photos, live music, Wedding hall, special events) . The performing arts, theaters, great restaurants with a lot of diversity to choose from, and if you enjoy professional sports you have the Brewers, Bucks, and the Green Bay Packers. If you want community service Marquette is huge on community service and you should ask about the program when you visit for accepted student’s day. My S was also admitted into UW-Madison and it was his first choice but once we visited both schools he chose Marquette. I was surprised on his decision because I never influenced him on where he should go. He is very happy and glad he chose Marquette. He was impressed with the faculty and how they encouraged him to talk to the students and ask questions. There is still faculty there from when I was a student! As it was my experience my S tells me faculty is always accessible. I can also recommend the facebook site where you can communicate with current students <a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook; . Hope this helps!

Thanks newsdorms for all the information. I hope after visiting SLU and Marquette in April I will get a strong vib and be able to finally make a decision. I received my acceptance to the honors college yesterday so if Marquette is my choice, I know I will probably dorm in Straz. It’s a little further from the classrooms, but from what I read it has the best dining hall on campus and a fitness center which is all really appealing, especially, in the winter when I won’t have to trek out for food and will have no excuse to workout!

I’m glad to hear that Milwaukee has some life because I do not know much about the city. Last time I visited was 2 days after the blizzard and it was snowing on Sunday, so my mom and I just drove around the city. Being it was Sunday morning and snowing, it was pretty dead. I’m originally from NY and have family all over the east coast where I was hoping to go to college. The 6-year DPT programs aren’t in the east coast cities, except BU and Northeastern.

I know that Chicago is an hour away, do the student’s go for the day, or concerts?? I’m used to traveling. It takes me nearly an hour just to get to high school, so having Marquette so close to Chicago was appealing to me. I love Chicago!!!

Thanks again for the info –

MU has always had a very large contingent of Chicago area students enrolled there. That, in and of itself, often makes travel to Chicago on weekends easier…we went quite often when I attended. Madison is also a short drive in the other direction and can be a fun weekend trip as well. I had friends from all over WI so got to see much of the state while there…there are a lot of nice weekend getaways that are very short drives, unlike in Texas where I now live…

As newsdrms said, Milwaukee has much to offer; I used to enjoy going down to Lake Michigan to think, unwind, and just get away from things when needed…there are lots of great restaurants and plenty of shopping for those so inclined.

The weather isn’t going to be delightful at any of the schools you mentioned but in my days there I had friends from CA, several from Hawaii, and plenty of kids from the deep south. The whole key to surviving northern winters is learning to layer…and because the campus is urban, nothing is too far away…unlike some Big 10 like campuses that have twenty minute walks from the dorms to classroom areas.

When comparing to SLU I think the proximity to Chicago, being on Lake Michigan and also having Madison nearby make MU a much more attractive destination…St Louis is sort of in the middle of nowhere…you can drive to Kansas City or Columbia but why would you?

From a travel perspective, having Chicago that close can also open up better airfares and more choices during peak times and it’s usually not hard to get rides to O’Hare. In my time at MU (long ago-70-74) there were always people heading “somewhere” on weekends and it wasn’t hard back then to find a ride if you’d help with gas etc…these days as cars are much more prevalent with college students, I’d bet it’s even easier.

Thanks eadad for all the information. I knew a majority of the students came from the Chicago suburbs so, now that you brought it to my attention, it makes sense that traveling to Chicago would be no big deal. Chicago definitely has more to offer that St. Louis and Pittsburgh, but both of the cities have neat little pockets to explore, other colleges and college hangouts, and good sports.

I have direct non-stop flights to Tampa on Airtran from Milwaukee, and Southwest to St. Louis and Pittsburgh, but it is true that Chicago has two airports that are a great back-ups when traveling so far away. Although, there’s less snow in Pittsburgh and St. Louis, so less chance of delays and cancellations. Airtran between Tampa and Milwaukee offer very good rates which is a plus.

As for the whether, I know it’s going to be freezing!!! But the good thing is that I get relief because I get to go to sunny Florida over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break – I’m sure I’ll have lots of friends visiting then!!! Thanks for the layering tip! I’m going to need a whole new wardrobe. I’m actually looking forward to having change in seasons and playing in snow. Sunny and HOT can get very boring!

I’m really looking forward to visiting next weekend and staying over with a student. This should really give me a better idea of life at Marquette. It will also be nice to see the campus without 2 feet of snow covering it. Marquette is hosting a trolley tour through the city on Monday so that will give me a good feel of Milwaukee.

Thanks again for all the input eadad and newsdrms - it has been very helpful.

Glad I could help.

One thing to remember about weather…even though Milwaukee gets more snow than the other two cities, they are truly prepared to deal with it…unlike many other cities. I’d be interested to see how often Mitchell Field’s service is disrupted when compared to Pittsburgh or St Louis.

I grew up 60 miles from Pittsburgh and still use the airport when visiting family…I’ve had more delays for fog and weather there than I can remember…have had flights diverted from there due to weather as well.

In my four years at Marquette we only had one occurrence where snow shut things down or canceled day classes…it was a freak snow storm that shut the city down for three days…we did have classes canceled a few times each year due to ice but it usually impacted late afternoon and evening classes due to the problems it might create for the commuters in them.

@erp1821 – as eadad, I’m also glad that you found my posting helpful. After helping my three children through this process for the past three years I decided to stick around and try to be of help. Bear in mind that there might still be snow around this weekend (lol)! Do you know what dorm you will get to stay in? If you get McCormick that will be the noisiest/rowdiest dorm, so do not judge dorm life on that experience. Do not hesitate to ask students or faculty about any doubts or concerns you might have. They are very friendly and will go out of their way to try to answer. Hope you enjoy your visit and keep us posted!

Thanks eadad and newsdrms – it’s nice to hear from people who actually attended Marquette and still like to provide info to confused students!!! I don’t know who I will be shadowing, I would assume a health science major because I will be attending class with them on Monday morning. Staying at McCormick will be fun for this weekend experience – I wouldn’t want to live there if it’s too wild but I’m sure I will be attending many parties there if I attend!! I will ask lots of questions – I have to make a decision very soon. I’ll keep you posted about my decision. Thanks again

thank you for this information. i am also considering Marquette, SLU and Duquesne honors college.

Make sure you all come back and let us know what you have decided… :)

My son is strongly considering MU (after being wait listed by Notre Dame). He’s been accepted into the Honors program and will choose Straz tower as his dorm if he ultimately selects MU. After visiting the MU campus many times over the past 2 months for the scholarship exams, a basketball game, advisor visit, etc. I dropped my son off yesterday for an informal over-night shadow visit with some friends of his who graduated from his high school last year.

To reinforce earlier comments with respect to the partying/drinking atmosphere… I know a bunch of current MU students and asked them similar questions. My son is not the partying/drinking type of kid so it was a concern of his. The unanimous response to my questions was that it’s there if you want it like any other college, but there is really no pressure to participate if its not your thing. Apparently, your attitudes on partying/drinking are pretty much respected by others and nobody is going to pressure you one way or another. Of course this may very well depend on the group of kids you choose to hang out with.

Hi all,

I have finally made my decision. I will be attending SLU in the fall. Let me tell you that this was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. Duquesne was out as soon as I visited SLU on Saturday. The Admitted Students Day was organized really well and I fell in love with the head of the PT department there. I also met two girls and we just bonded so quickly.

I thought in my head that SLU it was. Then I arrived at Marquette on Sunday for Admitted Students Day. They put on an amazing day. The weather couldn’t be more perfect for Milwaukee in April - 74% and Sunny. I talked to so many current students and they were all so happy. Then I met my shadow - there was three of us staying with her at Straz - one girl from Long Island (where I was born), and another from Illinois. We had the best time. I was afraid that Straz would be a little boring because it would be filled with smart geeks – and this was not the case at all. For one thing, the dorm is amazing and the rooms are huge. Everyone was welcoming and we felt right at home. The guys are on the 17th floor and the girls are on the 16th and 18th floors. My shadow had a great mix of guy and girl friends that we had a great time with.

Monday I attended a Biology class with my shadow and took a tour of Milwaukee on a trolley. Another nice day 54% and sunny. Milwaukee is really into the arts, which I would have never guessed. There are so many theaters. There are so many little diverse pockets to explore – I found the city absolutely charming – the lakefront amazing. My mom and I went to lunch at the Water Buffalo and shopped in the Third Ward - amazing little boutiques. So on my flight home – I was just as confused as before I left for my trip!!!

I decided on SLU because I loved the campus better. It’s bigger and landscaped beautifully. It’s more contained so it felt more like a college campus – but you still have easy access to the city. Though St. Louis does not offer a lakefront – it does have Forest Park which is the largest urban park in the U.S. – I always thought it was Central Park, NY. The park has ice skating, great hills for tubing in the snow, free museums and zoo. I really loved that aspect.

But when it came right down to it - the weather was the main reason. I loved the city of Milwaukee and the academic quality of Marquette – but after talking with the students – it’s just too cold for too long. St. Louis offers me the four seasons that I want – but has milder winters. It’s also about an hour and fifteen minutes closer than Milwaukee to where I live by plane. Driving will take 15 hours – better that 21-22 hours.

For all that decide on Marquette - congrats!!! It’s a great school.

Thanks to all for all the wonderful insights that you have provided to me in these last few months. I wish you all the best!

Glad you were able to make an informed decision. Sad Marquette lost such a good candidate. You are a very smart and mature young person and I know you will be very successful enjoy your college years!

Hay erp, I think I was there at SLU Saturday. It is really a beautiful and accepting campus. Did you stay in the huge “sleepover” room? Ahhhghgfggh crampness lol it was da bomb. What dorm are you going to be staying at? Oh and newsdrm and eadad, did you ever change majors and what was one thing you thought you knew going into college, then changed? Just one info, you wished someone would of told you. And thanks a bunch for being so helpful and willing to help.
