Marquette is my dream school. They have the major I want and no other schools in the area have it. It's just so expensive. I have a 27 on my ACT and a 3.98 GPA. I have plenty of volunteer hours and I'm NHS vice president.
I was just wondering how much aid I could possible get from Marquette. I probably don't demonstrate financial need. Any estimates?

Check out the NPC and see if it uses GPA and ACT scores to come up with an estimate.

IMO, using the stats at hand, your chances are not good. The average ACT at Marquette is 27. So you are average there with that test score. 24% of the kids have test scores above 30 and only aobut 11% get merit money. What that means is that even a 30 ACT does not mean a good chance of merit money. The average merit award is about $10K which means to be getting a significant chunk of change that way you have to have much higher test scores, or have something else the school really wants, some strong hook.

You may have to look out of area to find a school with the major you want, and that will enhance your chances of getting merit money, as well. What is this major?

There are two automatic-consideration scholarships, and this page also has contact information. You could try calling to ask when offers are made.

Please understand that I am not advising you NOT to apply to Marquette. One never knows how things can work out in the process. But looking at stats alone, your chances are not good for getting sizeable merit money there. So if it’s a school you really like, keep it on your list, but start looking for schools with lower sticker prices, alternative wayt to study what you want without that major, schools outside your area where you might be in line for sizeable merit money.

There is a thread about the on-campus scholarship competition.

*They have the major I want and no other schools in the area have it. *

What is this unique major and your career goal?

You say that you don’t qualify for financial aid (FA is need-based). As for scholarships, it doesn’t look like your ACT 27 will qualify for awards…or at least enough to make a dent in the cost.

How much will your parents pay?

you need to find other schools that will work because it doesn’t sound like Marquette will work for you.

Thanks for the replies.

Hopefully your estimates are off, but sadly, I don’t believe they are. I guess it was one of those things where I wanted it so badly I was just hoping.

This is the only school in my area that offers Human Resources and a very urban feel to campus. When I visited Marquette, I loved it more than anything. I have never wanted anything more than to go to Marquette.

So far, I have applied for well over 50 outside scholarships in an attempt to be able to go there, but I don’t think that will make a dent in the cost either.

Luckily, I do have a backup school: UW-La Crosse. It has Business Management as a major, but I was really loving the idea of being able to major in Human Resources.

The Business Management program at UW-L only has one or two actual Human Resources classes, where the one at Marquette has many more in the curriculum.

I have also read that upon receiving my award in the mail, I can attempt to negotiate more money. I am not giving up just yet!

It is not too late to apply to UW-Madison; the School of Business has the major ‘Management and Human Resources’. The 27 ACT score is in the middle 50th percentile of admitted students (27-30); keep in mind that is admitted students, not students who accept the offer of admission (the middle 50th percentile of students who accept offers of admission is likely lower than the 27-30).

To get into the School of Business, you’d need to apply after completing the prerequisites.

In addition, any student at UW-Madison can enroll in many of the School of Business courses after business students get first dibs (and if there is space available).

Since you say that you don’t qualify for FA, how much will your parents pay each year? If you haven’t asked them, do so.

Applying for private scholarships may end up being a waste of time if your goal is paying for Marquette. Look at the fine print of those offers. Very likely they are only for freshman year…one time scholarships. And, there won’t be money for soph year on.

No one has to major in HR to do that job. HR folks are English majors, business majors, etc.

I really appreciate your replies. This post has helped me out A LOT!

Ever since I received my acceptance letter, I have just been thinking about how much I’d love to go to Marquette, I forgot to think about what is really practical… especially for my career choice. Truth be told, I had already submitted my enrollment deposit at UW-L, but when I got my letter from Marquette, I sort of freaked out about it haha.

I still haven’t received my financial aid letter yet, but unless I win the lottery very soon, I’ll be up at UW-L. I love the city of Milwaukee, so maybe after college I can get a job and live there.

Do you guys know a whole lot about UW-La Crosse? My older sister goes there, but she doesn’t have any insight about their business program. Any info would be much appreciated.
