Marquette

I was wondering if Marquette is a good school. I looked online and noticed that theyre ACT scores that they let in are pretty low. But I also know that its a private school, which are usually more prestigious that public schools. In school I have a 4.2/4.0 GPA and got a 32 on my ACT. I dont want to sound arrogant, but am I selling myself short by going to Marquette? I visited the school and absolutely loved it there.

I went and visited the campus and absolutely loved it there. From what I was able to gather, it seems like there is a lot of options to study abroad as well as intern for big companies.

Have you investigated Marquette’s Honors Program? Perhaps that would be a better fit for you within the larger university. Also, are you in need of merit aid? Marquette has a number of generous scholarships, not all of which require a separate application: [Scholarships | Marquette University](http://www.marquette.edu/student/ugrad/scholarships.shtml)

Marquette has a very good regional reputation. Generally the students from our area who go there are strong students looking for a private school without a private school price tag (eligible for merit aid).

It all depends what you are interested in, all schools have strengths and weaknesses. You already made a visit and “loved it”. As an Eng. ’83 graduate I can tell you I really enjoyed Marquette and the Engineering program was very good. I have a son that will be a Soph. in the School of Engineering and is really happy. If you know what you will major in lmk and I might be able to tell you how good the program is. Good luck!

Im all across the board for what I may want to major in. My main choices are either physical therapy or Poly-sci then applying to a law school after

Physical therapy and nursing programs are very good, but also kind of hard to get in. There is a brand new building for law at Marquette and from what I know the program is very respectable.

Don’t let a school’s overall test score averages mislead you. Universities that offer a wide variety of majors (including some easy majors) are going to have some students with lowish scores attending. My kids go to their big state flagship. However, their majors are engineering and math. The kids with the lower test scores are not in their majors.

Also, don’t assume that privates are better than publics. That’s not true. There are many publics that are better than many privates.

However, Marquette is a good school. It’s Jesuit and a Jesuit education is very good. :)

However, since law school is in your future, you may want to minimize any loans for undergrad. Can you afford Marquette? Will your parents pay for it?

If money is an issue, you should also apply to some good schools that will give you big assured merit for your stats. Those schools can be your financial safety schools.

Spending less for undergrad may make law school more affordable for you.

Marquette is not the most difficult school to get into but it is a good school with a solid alumni network. People who go there have a strong identity with the school.

I forgot to include in my post that Farfallenena is very right about honors college opportunities at Marquette (as well as at other schools).

Honors Colleges usually have the best and brightest students in them. Often there are minimum req’ts (stats) to be accepted. My kids really enjoy their honors classes. They’re smaller, they’re more discussion-based, and their classmates are typically very academically oriented.

I think everybody is giving really good advice. Concerning State Universities if you are OOS you might end up paying the same or even more than private. My oldest son is at ISU and I currently pay $15K. My second attends Marquette and because of merit aid I pay $12K. If you have a good GPA & scores Marquette does give good merit aid (4 yrs!).

Yea, I have a 4.2/4.00 GPA and a 32 on my ACT, so im pretty sure that I can get some money from Marquette. I dont think that I would have any problem affording Marquette. Thanks for all the input. It helped a lot

Husband & I are Marquette Accounting grads. The Business school has a very good reputation.

What kind of scholarship did your child get? Full tuition? What stats were needed? Was the scholarship automatic or was it competitive?

Marquette has the Ingatius Scholarship that is automatic up to $14K per yr and is distributed depending on the pool of applicants. He got $12k plus Marquette gave us $6k need based aid (Marquette gives merit aid for 4 yrs). Then he also gets some work/study plus some federal aid (since I have 3 in college). Marquette also has a bunch of different competitive scholarships ([Scholarships | Marquette University](http://www.marquette.edu/student/ugrad/scholarships.shtml)) but he only tried his college test competition and did not get selected (this one is based on test scores that you take for the college you are accepted). Hope this helps.

Ah…so because of merit AND need-based aid, your cost is $12k. Of course that’s really good, but since there are some need-based aid included, someone without need would get a lot less.

Will you have 3 in college the entire time this child is at Marquette? If not, then it’s likely there will be a year or more that your cost will rise as EFC increases and some need-based aid goes away.

He got the Marquette need base aid with only 2 in college, got some additional fed aid with 3 but only about 1k more, so when the oldest graduates in 2 years the dif will probably only be about 1k. Just trying to make the point that if you go to a State school as OOS sometimes there is not that big of a difference in tuition.

That can be true…with good-sized merit a private can be cheaper than an OOS public. But, an OOS public can be similarly priced or even cheaper than an instate public with good merit as well. My kids’ state flagship gets many OOS top students because with merit, going OOS is cheaper than their own state schools.

If your child hadn’t had any need and only got merit, how much would have Marquette cost? Is the COA for Marquette about $50k per year?

Marquette cost is closer to $40K. My son is a freshman and received merit aid which brought the cost down to about equal to our state flagship school. Eric, my son is also in honors program which hopefully will provide a nice challenge. He applied to some more highly touted schools but loves MU and is very happy with the choice so far.
