So we’ll know the 20 people who are awarded the Fellowship next week? :D

Unless I’m mistaken, there were two finalists’ weekends, and one of them was February 21.

I am a finalist. I attended the February 22nd Marquis Fellowship Day, but I’m not going to disclose any information on the day for fairness reasons. 4.5 gpa W, 33 ACT, most rigorous course load. Extremely involved in many extracurriculars. Great essays, recs. Message me if you want more details on my stats!

Hello!

Yes, there were two fellowship days. One on Feb 22nd and another on March 8th (today). I attended as a current student involved in the evaluation process. The students all seemed to have a good time and it went very well!

Taylor

Taylor - Can you provide any more info on the selection process? How many candidates were there? For how many spots? What criteria are used for selection?

And, to those of you who attended - what did you think of it??? Did you like the school? Were you impressed by your fellow candidates? Was the interview process difficult? Any notable positives? Negatives?

dodgersmom,

I am a current junior at Lafayette who assisted on both Marquis Fellowship days to help evaluate the candidates. There were about 120 finalists selected, and 25 of them will receive the Marquis Fellowship of 40k/year. The others will very likely receive the Marquis Scholarship of 24k/year. The finalists were selected based on academic merit (high GPA and SAT score standards), as well as extracurricular involvement, contribution to their communities, leadership roles, letters of recommendation, etc. Basically everything that makes a well rounded candidate. At the dynamic assessment days (Feb 22nd and March 8th), we evaluated applicants based on how well they worked with others in their groups, as well as their ability to rise to a challenge. I played a part in this evaluation, but the admissions directors will have the ultimate say on who receives the fellowships/scholarships

I was very impressed by the candidates–they were all very bright, geographically and academically diverse, and quite articulate (and some were very funny too!). Our admissions staff has done an incredible job this year. We saw a 15% increase in applications (we received 7,777 this year), putting us in the top 1% of colleges in the country for application increase. Our acceptance rate this year is predicted to be 28%.

I am greatly looking forward to seeing the new students next year!

Let me know if you have any other questions. If you would like to learn more about Lafayette, I encourage you to check out my “Lafayette College Questions and Answers” forum on this site, which I have been running for over 2 years. Also, I am the social media coordinator of the admissions ambassador program, so I coordinate the newly launched Lafayette College Prospectives Facebook page. A team of 12 ambassadors posts new content each day, and we always check the inbox if you want to send us a message.

Hope all of that answers your questions :)

@captainclueless Were international students considered for the Marquis Fellowship? How about US citizens living abroad?

ALL applicants are considered :)

Hi @dodgersmom–my son and I were at the Fellowship day this past Saturday, and while I found the exercises they had the students do a little intimidating, my son said he had a really fun day. Students and parents were separated for most of the time, but the parents were treated to 30-second introductions by each of the kids, and I was very impressed by how poised and talented all of the finalists were.

There was incredible geographic diversity–lots of kids from states far away from PA, and several from overseas, even. We were introduced to many current Lafayette students (all Marquis Scholars, I think), and that really helped me to get a better feel for the school. For instance, a long conversation over lunch about frats and drinking on campus convinced me that the recent post to this forum from an unhappy freshman is not the norm on campus, even though the campus does seem to be transitioning from a heavy drinking atmosphere to an environment where kids who are less focused in that direction can be happy.

I like the school a lot–a panel of faculty, each answering questions along with one of their star students, painted a very impressive picture of faculty mentoring for undergraduates, and Lafayette’s great alumni network was subtly evident several times during the day. One thing that gives me pause, though, is that there is very little racial diversity on campus. All but one of the current Marquis Scholars I saw were white, and most of them seemed to be from the tri-state area. This may be mostly a function of the applicant pool Lafayette sees, but it’s disappointing to me as a parent, since I’ve always pictured my son at a school with many opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds.

Some Marquis fellows were notified today. Has anyone received Marquis scholarships? How do the awards arrive- snail mail or email?

Marquis Fellowship notifications came in a large white envelope, snail mail.

@justcurious96 Would you happen to know how international students or US citizens living abroad were notified? Never received anything and just checking.

@justcurious96 and USPS priority mail?

@bananarama15 - Not sure. I know the packages were mailed Friday and we received it yesterday. I would think you should receive something via email or expedited mail by today just to be fair.

@bananarama15 - USPS priority mail.

Ok thanks. Did any international students/students living abroad receive any emails/snail mail? Thanks!

Marquis Scholarship and admission notification arrived yesterday by US postal service in MD in a large white Lafayette envelope. Further FA information to arrive at the end of the month, according to information in the mailing.

Ditto to ^jkeil911 but we are in CT.

Can some of the recipients post some of their stats?
