marquis scholar

I was accepted as a marquis scholar and while I was so excited to have a 16,000 scholarship (so were my parents) I don't know anything else about the rest of the program.

It mentioned something about special trips and lectures you get to take but do you have to pay extra for these trips? Also do they pay for you to study abroad? Basically what are the perks of being a marquis scholar beside the fabulous 16,000 dollars?

mo_running,

First off, congratulations on being named a Marquis Scholar! Do you plan on making the trek over to Easton, Pa. to attend one of the Scholar days?

I answered a similar question back on 4/24/06, and I've taken the liberty of posting it here for your "enjoyment":

<<< In response to your inquiry on Marquis Scholar trips, it is true that most trips take us to New York City, Philadelphia, or D.C.. These cities are fairly close to Lafayette's campus by bus and have so many great options for potential trips. [3/14 NOTE: A trip to a Broadway show is currently scheduled for an upcoming Sunday]

For most trips, there is a limit to how many Marquis Scholars may go. Usually, an email is sent to the Scholars with a description of the trip, time, date, etc. The first 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 students (it depends on the activity) who reply to that email and reserve their spot get to go on the trip. The trips typically have some kind of educational value [AND ARE FREE!!!].

If you take advantage of the opportunities presented to Marquis Scholars by going on a few of the trips each year, you will most certainly become good friends with other Marquis Scholars. If you do not go to any of the sponsored events, either on or off campus, then do not expect to form a close knit group of friends with other Scholars...it is as simple as that! I know that I have made many great friends from all grade levels within the program because of that commonality.

I am having trouble recalling any of the speakers that came to campus specifically for Marquis Scholars [last] year, but I do remember that students who were not Scholars wished they could attend. If I think of any names/topics of lectures, I will let you know. I attend the programs of so many guest speakers at Lafayette that I do not remember which ones spoke just to the Scholars. >>>

Also, as stated on the Lafayette website:

<<< As a benefit of the Marquis Scholars’ program, the College funds the program fee for one faculty-led, interim-abroad course for each Marquis Scholar. >>>

These trips typically run around $5,000 apiece, so that's definitely a perk. I'll finally be taking advantage of that perk this May when I spend three weeks in Italy to study Renaissance art.

My D was accepted as a Marquis Scholar too. It was the first school she's heard from. It was a lovely admission letter and a nice way to start the next 2 weeks of this agonizing process. Thank you Lafayette for being so genuine and sincere. She had these questions: How many Marquis Scholars are there in each class? and I thought you mentioned once something about dorming in a particular dorm? Do the Scholars meet as a group regularly or just when there are sponsered events? My question is does each student have a faculty advisor to help quide them thru the 4 years? Thanks

purplegirl,

Currently, there are about 50 Marquis Scholars in each class.

No, Marquis Scholars do not reside in any particular dorm. I don't remember saying anything of the sort...if you can direct my attention to such a comment, please do so.

Marquis Scholars most often gather during sponsored events. On occasion, a meeting will be called by the Scholar advisers to discuss upcoming events and to gauge interest in potential events.

Yes, every student at Lafayette is assigned a faculty adviser. That adviser is typically someone in the students' area of academic interest. They help students select courses each semester and ensures that adequate progress is being made toward a given major. They also help students gain various research opportunities, and are always willing to provide recommendations for their advisees.

thanks for the response, and I wont be able to make it out to the scholar days as I am on the west coast, but as far as I'm concerned Lafayette has just moved up a few spots on my list!

My son was accepted ED in December. By the specs I'm seeing on these posts, the chances had looked good for Marquis or Trustee scholarships (1470/2170; 4.6 GPA) ... should I assume that all notifications have gone out for both types?
In any case, he's very excited to be coming.

uechimom,

Notification for both types of merit-based scholarships were sent out mid-March.

Justin, are either of the merit-based scholarships offered after admission RD to Lafayette. Is it possible or probable that any of the scholarships go given to students who are not attending go to others? Thank you
