Hello. This is my first post so forgive me if the answer is elsewhere, if I posted this in the incorrect place, etc.

I am presently going to school fully on financial aid (grants). I am unemployed so I can concentrate on my studies. My fiance makes 61,000 (gross income) but is in great debt. If we get married will I lose my financial aid? Has anyone been in this situation before?

Thank you everyone.

Run the Net Price Calculator for your college using the figures you would have if you were married. My guess is that you would lose a lot of grant aid. If she’s in a lot of debt, you certainly don’t want any of your own, or it will take the two of you forever to pay it all off once you do get married. She should be paying that down now rather than putting you through college.

Yes, you will lose aid. It would be wise to wait to get married until you finish school.

Thank you! I just looked up the Net Price Calculator and ran the numbers. Your help is really appreciated and I will now put off our wedding :P
