Marshall Business Major + Comp Sci Minor? Is this useful?

Hi guys.

I'm really excited to be going to Marshall, I feel like it's a strong program with good opportunities.

However, I'm really unsure as to what to minor in. I was originally going to minor in economics, but I felt like that wasn't different enough from business and wouldn't really extend my opportunities or knowledge that much.

I wanted to double major in business and comp sci but quickly discovered that this is nigh impossible to do in 4 years, so I settled for a minor.

Now I'm wondering if there's any point in minoring in comp sci at all, will this help me? Sure, I find comp sci interesting, but I'm not sure if that justifies all the extra coursework unless it would actually help me in job search and stuff. I like the idea of combining business with something quantitative like compsci (I was originally an econ/math major before transferring), but I'm not sure.

Lemme know what you think! Thanks.

CompSci is absolutely useful! A business and CompSci degree is a great combo because of the increasing role of technology in today’s world; having a business background will enable you to not only understand the business side of tech, but will also allow you to get a job in the business side of a tech company.

By the way, there is a dual degree called Computer Science / Business Administration, offered by the Viterbi School of Engineering. It was specifically designed for people to complete in 4 years. I would take a look, since you’re interested.

Best of luck!

Do consider the dual major offered by Marshall and Viterbi. You can call Marshall for information or discuss this with your academic advisor.

Another suggestion would be to consider continuing the foreign language you took in high school and become fluent. Business is global these days and having the ability to speak at least one other language well would be an asset in a tight job market.

I actually saw that dual major, but the problem I had with it was that it’s hosted by Viterbi, so I don’t get a lot of the perks of being in Marshall. For instance i’m in GLP right now, but I don’t think I can be in it if I switch to the dual major. I really wanted to do that though…

The foreign language thing is interesting. I’ve been to Japan several times and I have some speaking ability. Perhaps I should pursue that.

Computer Science / Business Administration is a great program but seems to focus more on the CS side. CS as a minor for a business major would definitely help if you want to go into technology. Not only could you get an internship with Apple in their financial dep, but you would be way more valuable to a start up too. If you don’t want to go into technology, then the language idea is way better.

I’d suggest Business major with CS minor also. This would be the combo you’d want if you’d like to get setup for financial engineering or maybe want to get involved in a startup business which is quite easy to do at USC.
