I've been looking into living in the Martha Cook building, but I have a few questions. Any help (even if you're not living there but still have advice, etc) would be appreciated!

What kind of events are held there? Do you ever get bored living there? Does it feel lacking in the excitement/fun that other dorms seem to have? I'm not a drinker or crazy partier (partyer?) but I like to have fun.

Since it's an all girls dorm, do you think living there makes it harder to make guy friends? And is there a sterotype for girls that live there?

Hi! I live at Martha Cook. It’s a nice dorm. So some of our events are having tea every Friday. Tea is a great way to just relax and have fun and it’s a great thing to invite your friends (or people you want to be friends with) to. There’s also International Tea, which is the dorm’s biggest event. It’s in March and offers samples of food from all over the world.

I think you can get bored living anywhere. But Martha Cook has a perfect location so that even if you do get bored there’s no shortage of other places to go. I think the girls here have plenty of fun, I mean, there’s groups of people who party and groups of people who do but not as often and groups of people who just don’t. It really depends on who you make friends with! But it’s really easy to make friends.

It probably is a little harder making guy friends here since there aren’t any living here, but you can counter that pretty easily by joining a club or being involved in a study group or anything, really, where you can meet guys.

I have to warn you, there is a pretty negative stigma among certain people about living here. Sometimes MC is called the “Virginal Vault” and stuff like that. So you’ll talk to some people who automatically will think you’re a loser for living here and then you’ll talk to some people who want to come to tea to see what it’s like, and actually visiting the building seems to make most people rethink their preconceptions.

This got kind of long. But anyway if you have more questions you can message me or something, okay?

If you’re set on living in a girls’ dorm, I’d recommend Betsy Barbour or Helen Newberry first. The location is honestly probably the best on campus - right across from Angell Hall and right near the corner of South State and North University. Compared to Martha Cook, Newberry and Barbour seem a lot less formal and strict. It’s (I live in Barbour right now) not a ‘party’ dorm by any means, but it’s plenty social, but small enough to feel like a close-knit community.

guys aren’t supposed to be on the sleeping floors from like 11pm to 9 am on weekdays and 2am to 7 on weekends or something like that, but that’s actually a really nice rule because it means your roommate can legit get in trouble for forcing you to deal with her boyfriend sleeping over all the time, which is not fun. but then again, it’s not like the rules are enforced unless someone tells on you, and no one likes a tattle tale.
