Martin outlines plans for UW future

Good read.

Bucky in the New Millennium - Madison Magazine - September 2010

If Martin wants to raise UW’s tuition to match its peers, she’s going to have to do something about raising UW’s 4-year graduation rate to match its peers.

No one will even give UW a 2nd look when they realize there’s a much greater chance of the total cost of their education being higher at UW because of the extra time it historically has taken to graduate.

Apparently, UW’s refusal to address and fix its low 4-year graduation rate problem is pretty well known in higher ed circles.

Excerpt from comment #8, here:

[I’m</a> Gonna Be Sick - Brainstorm - The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/blogPost/Im-Gonna-Be-Sick/23724/)

Do you even know who Robert W Tucker is? He is a shill for the for-profit education lobby. Pretty good with the google but you might look a little deeper first.
The UW System cooperates on most educational matters. That’s why there are certain majors only at selected system schools with all new programs approved by the UW System Admin, transfer classes are coordinated through the Transfer Information System which tells you which classes at one campus will count for what on another campus. They also have a clear track for transfers from the Wisconsin 2 year colleges. If you go to several UW campuses you might even see the same dorm design from one to another.

UW students may choose to stay longer for a long list of reasons including nobody wants to hang around Champaign a second longer than they have to.

Or maybe they just want to get out before the state goes completely broke

California Isn't the State Most Likely to Default Anymore;

Yes, I know who he is.

The fact remains that UW stalls the progress of students through degree program course progressions because of their general admission policy that locks students out of classes that are open only to those admitted to specific colleges and degree programs.

Everyone knows UW’s low 4-year graduation rate is a problem. How about less puffery and combatitiveness, barrons, and more actually doing something to fix the problem? Consider it a challenge to help improve your beloved UW.

Chancellor Martin obviously wants to improve the grad rate:

In liberal arts only Journalism requires an additional application so your statement is false for all liberal arts majors–the largest school on campus. For Eng you spend one year in pre-eng classes and enter as a soph. Most eng majors take over 4 years if you do a two semester co-op program which is encouraged. All ag school majors are open to freshmen. Teacher Education School is a five year program for most and you apply after soph year. Admission is competitive; however relatively fewer OOS (22% inc Minn) students major in education as it can be state specific for licensing.

Hmmm… so many excuses… so little addressing and fixing the problem.

How is it that UIUC has about twice as many undergrad engineering students, yet graduates 28% more students in 4 years than does UW? In addition, UIUC’s engineering undergrad program is ranked 6th. UW’s doesn’t even make the top 10.

People aren’t just making these problems up, barrons. The proof is in UW’s abysmally low 4-year graduation rate. College Results Online (The Education Trust) has the 2008 stats up now. UW’s 4-year graduation rate is only 49.7%.
[College Results Online](http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/)

UW’s engineering is ranked 13th.
According to the more recent and accurate UW data the 4 year grad rate has improved to over 52% and is up nearly 10 points in just 6 years.

You are now entering Ignore. See ya. Or not actually.
