So I recently have been admitted into the engineering school for computer engineering and I know that every student must take the math placement exam. I was wondering what classes the test can recommend me to be placed in since I scored a high enough AP score on the Calculus BC exam to get 4 credits for each MATH140 and MATH141 and I’ll be able to do all math up to Calculus proficiently. Also, what math do you all personally recommend I should take my freshman year? Linear algebra, Calc 3, or differential equations?
Did you get a 5 on the AP Calc BC exam? Are you in Honors? If so, take Calc III honors. Small class is nice. The MPE will not test you to that level. Just ace it, and forget it.
@plumazul No I only got a 4, but the only thing I didn’t understand was Taylor series and a 4 still counts for credit. I’m also in Scholars and not Honors.
For anyone with a 4 or a 5 in CalculusBC, I would recommend
Freshman Fall:
MATH240 Elementary Linear Algebra
MATH241 or 241H Calculus III
Freshman Spring:
MATH246 or 246H Elementary Differential Equations
In particular for those with a 5, if they like challenging math classes (e.g. they’ve been into preparing for math olympiads etc) they may want to do the MATH340-341 Honors sequence instead of the above three courses. The 340-341 sequence is equivalent to the 240-241-246 sequence but is significantly more intense.
No matter which sequence one chooses, it is advised to get hold a suitable textbook for each of these classes at least a month before the semester starts and get familiar with some of the material since a 14-week semester flies by at a rapid pace.
