I'm applying early to NYU, even though its a bit out of my reach. I'm also applying to American, GW, BU and Emerson. What are my chances at those schools and what other schools should i consider applying to (really want a city school)?

The schools on your list are fine, but I think you need to add some safeties. I think you'll probably get into American, and I think GW and BU are two reasonable reach schools. I am not sure about Emerson.

Try to find some city schools that will be safeties for you. Since you are from Md. why not Towson? It is a few miles from Baltimore and probably an hour from your home. You might look at George Mason. I do not know what you think you would like to major in, so you will need to make sure that they have your major and it is a strong department. Since you like BU, you might consider Northeastern U (just be prepared to do a coop and take a yr. longer to graduate bcs of it). NE is a match for you. You have to find some safety schools that you can be happy with if you do not get into your match/reach schools. Another match school for you is Fordham in NYC.

pinkmartini, Your welcome. I am concerned that you do not have some solid safety schools. A safety school would be a school where you are sure you can get in, sure you and your family can afford it, and where you will still be happy should everything else not work out. I think you should have at least 2 safety schools. Keep in mind that your verbal sat score falls just short of the 25%, but your math score falls right at the 75% (which is good). It is really important to focus on some safety schools, some feel more important than match and reach schools. Many CC parents feel that a safety school would have your verbal and math sat scores falling at or above the 75%, and you need to make sure you can afford it, and be happy there.

How do you feel about Towson or George Mason? Towson would not be a true safety bcs your vebal score is not at the 75%. I am not sure about what GM's sat scores are, but I suspect that it is a little less competitive than Towson.

I don't think I'll be happy at Towson or GM... i really want to be in DC, NYC, or Boston. I think Emerson might be a good match/saftey for me, are there any other schools in Boston that match up with my stats, that you know of?

You are below the 25% in Verbal for Emerson, but I would definitely apply and see what happens. You just need to add some safeties. I don't know the stats or much about these schools, so you would need to check them out yourself : Wheaton (I believe it is Catholic and in a suburb of Boston. I think you need a car to get into Boston, but a decent school). There is Wheelock, which I know zip about, Emmanuel College (Catholic, liberal arts- do a search bcs some parents were talking about it on this site; do not know mid range sat scores), UMass (different campuses have diff. stats), and what I believe is a true safety for you- Suffolk University (here your math score is way over the top and your verbal is at the 75%, problem here I think could be housing. The strongest department I think is business).

One more, this is not a safety, but more of a match- Simmons College, but is all women, although when I looked it up it has 1.5% men (which I still consider all women).

In my high school Towson is more of a safety school for people who cant get into University of Maryland College Park. Its mostly Maryland kids, but i think its a pretty good school. It might be harder if u're out of state.. but im not sure

Thanks. I did know that Towson is the school ppl go to that do not get into UMD, but I met some ppl in the honors college that chose Towson, not bcs they could not go to UMD, but bcs of the smaller class sizes and smaller school atmosphere overall. I don't get the feeling that it is tougher oos bcs I think they want oos #s at around 30% (and they obviously have a lot less oos applicants-mostly from PA, NJ and NY). A lot of NY kids like this choice instead of the freezing SUNYs (even though they will need to pay more to go to Towson).

kinglin,
Tell us about Saint Louis U. How large are the 101 classes? What is the campus like? How many students are from the northeast? Is it in a nice area or bad neighborhood? How is the food, and how are the dorms? Can you live on campus all 4 years and if not can you find reasonable priced housing?
How are the internships and how is job placement?

OK, you could be right for Churchill. I go to Whitman, and that's around .1-.2 lower than the 25% cutoff. If your teachers told you, I'm sure theyre right. (Whitman also doesnt rank, btw)

Drexel is a good school. A lot of students go there for engineering. The real tough thing you have to think about regarding Drexel is that its on a trimester schedule. My fiance's mom used to work at student health there and MANY students came in because of stress.
