Marymount Manhattan BFA Acting

MMC has accepted me to their BFA Acting program and I know very little about the school so I have a few questions. Is it a competitive program to get into or are most people accepted? What is the training like--is it a high quality acting education? What are the people like? Are they intelligent and are the academic courses any good? The quality of the school seems questionable and I am confused by the type of students that it attracts. Let me know if you have any info on the school.

It is competitive and you get a high quality acting education. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Can I ask you why you applied to a school that you thought the quality was questionable?

Thank you @NJTheatreMOM. And @shacherry, it wasn’t what I expected once I got there. I was expecting a typical liberal arts/theatre program and once I auditioned and attended the info session it seemed to not be quite as rigorous as they so claimed it to be. It is very important to me that my core education is of equal value to my acting (just in case I ever need to get a job outside of the theatre). My college admissions counselor also brought it up to me because of its reputation and location. I am a bit concerned that this reputation was more for musical theatre than straight, however.

Getting academic acceptance is quite easy I must say, but BFA acting program is very competitive. Congratulations on your acceptance! They have weekend for accepted students, this coming weekend I think. Will you attend, CharacterActress?

My son is a BFA Acting major at MMC. The BFA Acting Program is very competitive to get into so Congratulations! I would also agree that the academic acceptance is quite easy. My son was able to get scholarship money with his good grades. That said, he has enjoyed his liberal arts classes and has not felt they are lesser than his BFA classes. At MMC you have the freedom to make your major what you want it to be. My son has chosen to make it like a conservatory. He has only had 2 classes that are not related to his major his first year. You could easily do something different. He has had a fantastic first year and has been cast in two Directors Projects and an Off Off Broadway Musical and is a member of a sketch comedy group. The college is in a fantastic location and excellent training. I guess our biggest surprise is how many opportunities there are to perform.

Cjenny2-how many bfa and mt students are there?

We were told about 30 - 35 in each, not sure if this is accurate

I think it varies year to year. The second year there are juries that determine if you stay in the BFA program. It is based on many things including a performance first and second semester. Many students change their major from a BFA to BA with concentrations in Playwriting, Directing, Drama therapy among others.

@notactingmom unfortunately, no. I have prior engagements, and the accepted students day is actually today :(

Thank you for all the feedback everyone!

I have heard that they don’t take a certain number, they just take who they are willing to work with. The MT clas this year 2013-2014 was around 60 I think and BFA acting was close to that number, too. At least that’s what I’ve heard. But they don’t operate like an ensemble-based program. My S’s acting class only has 11 people in it. There are other acting classes, too, at different times. You stay with the same class all year for the acting classes, but every BFA or MT is not in the same class section at the same time.
