Marymount Manhattan BFA Acting

cjenny2, Actingmajormom, and thestage603, here’s a thread for discussing Marymount Manhattan

We’re waiting for decision from MMM but received a financial aid package yesterday.

Since the acceptances for academics and the BFA Acting program are separate, that is to be expected. Fingers crossed @HamletsMom! For you and all the others waiting patiently

Ha just stared on e too I will cancel mine

My son is a sophomore in the BFA Acting Program with a concentration in Writing for the Stage. My son has had some ups and downs but over all has enjoyed his time at MMC and is very happy with his choice. The BFA program has around 60 students in each class. I believe the number varies year to year. I can only answer questions based on our experiences and if others want to chime in please go right ahead!

We have not toured the school yet, but plan on waiting to hear from a few more schools to notify him. We have heard mixed reviews about MMC and I would love to hear your thoughts on the school, dorms, and we don’t recall hearing how many are accepted into the program? Thank you so much and Best of Luck! This is all so nerve-wracking.

My S auditioned on February 14th at the school. I believe they said about 100 accepted in the BFA Acting Program, but they also consider them for the BA Theater Program with a Focus on Theater Performance which I believe also accepts another 100. I believe there is also another BA theater with Musical Theater Minor that accepts 75.

I don’t think my son’s class was that big and this year is about 45-50. Many students change to the BA with a different focus. My son has known a few students who had to leave because of cost.

I found the area where the theaters are to be in a really nice location. The dorms are 16 blocks away, and we did not see them on our trip, would love to know more about them.

@cjenny2, I hear they accept that many to yield about half…does that sound right?

My son has really enjoyed his acting classes and his playwriting classes. He has been able to make his schedule fit his love of writing while keeping his BFA. That is one of the positive things about MMC you can make your experience very personal to your interests. There is flexibility to try new classes that you might not have time for in other BFA programs. This can make each student’s experience very different from the other. Being in NYC is a major plus and has been wonderful for my son. He performed in a musical his freshman year and wrote and directed another play this year for the Mid Winter Madness Play Festival and has has other opportunities to perform in theater companies in the city. He has had a literary internship at The New Group that has been wonderful. He has performed in two Directors Projects at MMC. He has not been cast in any of the main-stage shows yet but he is always busy with something going on. His dorm room was very small and he was happy to get an apt this year. I liked him being in the dorms and he was happy he did it for a year but was ready to leave. The food was similar to other colleges but he does not use it this year. He had made some great friends who are very creative and talented. It is a small school and I would say a negative is that some of the regular ed classes are not challenging. My son takes so few of them it does not stand out for us. He is enjoying taking a French class this semester. MMC provides one on one attention and his adviser stays with him every year to help him with classes and registration. Hope this helps!

@thestage603 that sounds about right.

The dorm building is wonderful. The views are amazing from some of the rooms. You get used to the walk to class. It’s NYC and getting used to transportation and walking in the city takes some time.

The acting classes are small, 8-12 students and they stay with the same group for a year and then get a new instructor and class each year after. This is different than other BFA acting programs that have the same students with each other for all four years.

I’m glad to see this thread! My daughter was accepted into BFA Acting in December, and it’s one of her top choices. The full financial aid package came yesterday. She’s waiting to hear from a few more schools, but all of this information is really helpful and interesting. We’ve toured the school and walked past the dorms.

Congrats @Creatives !! My son is very happy with his decision to go to MMC.

Congrats to you and your D @Creatives

@cjenny2, your son has a concentration is playwriting? Nice to hear he has time to make it personal. Are there other concentrations in theater itself, or can the students pick and choose many elective classes? Thanks!

It is a concentration in Writing for the Stage which is a concentration for the Theater BA but my son asked his adviser if he could add Writing for Stage to the BFA in Acting and they approved it.

Here are some options from the MMC web page:

The Department of Theatre Arts views a liberal arts education as an integral part of students’ theatre studies and training. It is our philosophy that the more well-rounded the education of theatre students, the better prepared they are to create and produce compelling and imaginative theatre.

We take great pride in the mentoring of our students. Faculty meet with students on an ongoing basis to review class work, discuss progress, advise on projects, and to guide artistic growth.
