Has anyone auditioned (or had a S or D audition for) this program? I have been searching on CC but it seems most of the information has to do with the MT program. I would love to hear from anyone who is either at the school or who has been there and visited/auditioned. I would also like to know the acceptance rate for the BFA acting if anyone has that information. Thanks!

Yes! My D auditioned a couple weeks ago for Marymount Manhattan’s acting BFA and BA. Two gentlemen were there (it was an off-campus audition on the west coast). One was an acting professor and one was an MT guy. The acting professor spoke at length about the differences between all their degree programs within theatre. About 40 people were in the room, half of them being parents. After about a half hour, the parents were asked to leave the room and then the students formed a classroom environment. They played icebreaker games to loosen up, which my D said she was really happy they did. They could have done something else between the icebreaker games and the auditions, but I don’t remember what my D said about that. Anyway, they were told to audition then. I think they did it in alphabetical order. Some of the students were told to do their piece again, with whatever modifications the professor told them, and others were not. They had told the students ahead of time not to read anything into who was versus who was not asked to perform twice. There was no commenting or applauding after each audition. Just one right after the other. After that, the group remained in the room and had a question/answer session which seemed to last about 20 minutes. Then the acting-only kids came out of the room, leaving the musical theater students behind to do their thing. And we left; but as we approached the car, we could hear the musical theater kids warming up, their lovely voices coming through the open windows on the second floor. On the way home, my D and her friend chatted about who they thought was good and who they thought was great. They were both very positive about the format of the session and both were very impressed with the school. Perhaps others on this forum who read this can fill in details I don’t know. Hope this helps though.

My D also participated in the west coast auditions a couple of weeks ago. She auditioned for MT and as violetsky said they had warm up exercises run like a class before the auditions. D really liked the format of the audition and felt good afterwards. I do not recall the number they said would be accepted for the BFA acting, but they emphasized that the BFA was a very structured program with not much opportunity to take outside classes.

We visited MMC the summer before last and D really liked it, but she had kind of forgot about it as she visited many other colleges after that. She was really happy that she auditioned for the school as she remembered again why she liked it so much after hearing the acting professor talk about it.

showmom858, Do you remember what it was about MMC your daughter liked when you visited? When we visited both my D and I were “underwhelmed”, ever though we were both expecting to love it. I’m not sure if we just hit it on a bad day or what.

I auditioned in SF in January. I like the idea of the program. from what I can tell…seems rigorous. however, one thing I didn’t necessarily like was the curriculum set up. first year, you do contemporary works…and each year you go back in time until your senior year, where all you do is classical works. I would prefer it to be more integrated, but that’s just me. about 50 people are accepted into the BFA Acting program, 100 people into the BA program, 70 of those musical theatre minors (I THINK). musical theatre is not a major at MMC…it is simply a minor that is extremely competitive to get into IF you are accepted to the BA program (usually BFA majors are not accepted into the MT minor).

azdaisy - D liked the feel of the school as it seems all classes included non theatre classes are small. She also loves the idea if she is a MT minor that every morning she will start her day getting on the subway and going to dance class. She loves NYC and believes this would be a good fit for her as she thinks a BA may be more to her liking than a BFA at this point.

My D and I had an enjoyable visit to Marymount Manhattan last weekend. She very much appreciated, though, getting a heads up with regards to the audition format, and she was surprised to find kids there who weren’t prepared for the different way of doing it. I felt as a parent that it would be a less stressful way of auditioning, but she was more rather than less nervous. She felt uncomfortable watching the other kids do their monologues and get (or not get) feedback from the teachers. She didn’t end up minding doing her monologue in front of them, she just felt funny being a witness to their auditions. (Be aware, by the way, that they are very strict on time, one girl got cut off when she had but two words left in her monologue and a boy got cut off before, as he put it, he got to the point of his monologue. They seem unduly, considering the kids only get to do one, concerned about time.) And she said that in spite of the classroom atmosphere it still felt like an audition and it was hard to be in the same room with 20 plus other nervous auditioners. I liked the info session. They have several programs within the theatre department, but my concern is about performance opportunities. It also seemed a bit difficult for a BFA Acting student to do a study abroad program. All in all, an interesting option.

When did the auditions become available for sign up for you all. Also, what do they want to see. Im a boy, applying to start for the summer semester to start early in 2014. Im applying early, like around now, and want to audition for the first day! What else can I do to make sure I get in talent wise!? Thanks!

P.S. If you haven’t noticed this is my #1 school.
