I’ve been reading the threads and still have a couple of questions about MMC:

I’ve heard from a parent that visited the campus with her D (after she was accepted - this about two years ago…2011?) and discovered that her D couldn’t stand the school atmosphere. She visited a few classes (non MT) and spoke with a few kids. One class was full of very disrespectful kids who talked throughout the class. They spoke to one of the only kids who seemed respectful and attentive afterwards and she admitted is was a problem in many of her classes. That student said she might leave MMC as it was not what she was expecting/hoping for.

We all know there are instances of bad behavior, etc. Was this a typical classroom experience at MMC? Our D is interested in MMC for Musical Theater. But it’s certainly important to have a good education outside of the theater.

Any thoughts on the MT program? Do the kids get many chances to perform?.. we have heard they do not.

Are the kids in MT allowed or encouraged to seek work on Broadway while in school?

How would you rank this program in NYC with Pace and NYU? Pros and cons of MMC?

If there are any other threads that answer these questions please feel free to direct me there.

Thanks for all your help and good luck to all of you in the field!

Are there any students who attend Marymount who could talk about what college is like with the lack of a campus? I got accepted for musical theatre and am worried about the lack of school spirit and campus.

I would love to hear a current student/parent give an answer to Mosdads questions above and let us know what the MT program is like. The youtube blog is rather rude and I am guessing not an accurate idea of the school. I would love to hear constructive information on the school. We received a great impression while we were there!

I know and have spoken at length with several non-theater/non-MT student who have successfully graduated from Marymount Manhattan with majors in the social sciences, IR and psych. All have moved on to grad school, and for the most part, all are pleased and positive about the education that received. There are always a few clinker professors on any campus, just like there are always a few clinker students. BUT, these students have reported that they felt they were able to develop positive relationships with professors, who connected them with internships and people in the professions they were interested in.

As far as lack of campus, that’s why many students go to school in NYC. They say that there is a camaraderie in the classroom, and mast student do socialize with each other – either in the dorms, or in their respective apartments. These are independent students, who are happy to be learning life lessons. NYC is expensive, so it’s also common for students to have part-time jobs.

As far as school spirit – it’s there, but it does not revolve around sports or teams. Because of the pervasive arts-focus, school spirit manifests in attendance at various performances, as well as at debates or other activities to support fellow students.
