Marymount Manhattan Dance BFA

Anyone have insights to share about this program? It seems to have a good reputation, but I’m having a hard time getting much specific or first-hand info about the program.

I have read several times that the auditions are huge and kind of a mess, with cuts happening all over the place and not always seeming to make sense.

My dd is very excited about the fact that they have an actual choreography concentration, and all the different dance styles that they offer (jazz and tap are even required in the choreography concentration). She is less excited about the urban setting and basically no campus, although is willing to consider it since it’s NYC with all that brings (and in a very nice part of NYC).

She has already submitted her academic application and is finishing up her (extensive) dance supplement. Still on the fence about auditioning–we may try to visit before deciding, since there are a number of other schools in the NYC area that she still wants to visit.

Any information appreciated!

My daughter is also excited about the choreography concentration. I know people there in the theater dept but not dance. My daughter has a friend from a summer intensive in the dance department who loves it. I’ve also heard that auditions are large. We toured the school two summers ago. NYC schools definitely have a different feel! She will be auditioning in January.

My daughter auditioned at MMU last year and enjoyed the audition. Students from the dance program were on hand to answer questions at the audition and they were all very enthusiastic about their school. My daughter loved the facilities- the studios were really nice- especially for being in NYC and she thought the faculty were great. The audition was not chaotic at all. They were very clear that they begin with all dancers and after a ballet and a modern class (there may have also been a jazz class) they make a round of cuts before watching solos. Several schools we went to, SMU and FSU to name a few, had the same procedure. Out of about 65 dancers, they put up a list of about 20 from whom they wanted to see solos. They then watch solos and do interviews- which was a great opportunity for my dancer to ask them questions. My daughter did not end up choosing MMU but it was a super hard decision for her and she was honestly still up in the air when she committed to another dance program. I think she would have been very happy there and I am sure their program is top notch- I know they have lots of working alumn in the dance world.

@Cooper2016 do you mind if I ask where your dd ended up going instead, and what led her to make her decision?

I treat a lot of dancers in this age group. This school is a very strong target for lots of them. These are pretty elite dancers for their age with traveling teams that enter competitions like in New York etc. From what I hear it’s a great school especially for dance.

My daughter’s friend is a junior at MMC and loves it. She is a super talented choreographer (modern and contemp) and is getting some notoriety. Her parents said if she wanted to major in dance she would also need to major in something else. There were some colleges that wouldn’t allow her to double major, so part of the reason she chose MMC was for that option.

Well my dd got her academic acceptance today! She still hasn’t finished her dance supplement (dragging her feet because she so sure about the program and she has a number of other options at this point), so it may be too late to get a dance audition anyway…

@Copper2016 Hi, my daughter is going through mostly the same audition circuit your daughter did last year (PPU, MMC, NYU, Pace, etc). May I ask what program she chose and how does she like it? thank you!

D just received acceptance for BFA in Jazz! She auditioned this past weekend on 1/25.

@oside2019 Wondering if you have information about the size of Class of 2024 (and what is the number in targeted spots in individual specializations)? Thanks !

@gmfalv Do you know if MMC requires or recommends solo style to match the major a dancer is applying to? For example, modern major/modern solo, jazz major/jazz solo. I know their website says any style solo but wasn’t sure how much it mattered to get in with your desired major. Hope this makes sense…

@weathergirl10 no its definitely not necessary-- my D auditioned with a contemporary/lyrical piece and put her #1 choice as Jazz BFA and got accepted to the Jazz program.

@gmfalv Thank you! Guess my dd was right
