Mason School of Business - Admission

I have read a bit about Mason but I have a couple of questions. What does the acceptance rate look like? The web site states that admission is competitive and based on GPA. Can anyone give any more detail then that? I am curious on how hard it is to get in to - thank!

@Cal1983, you are welcome to contact the Mason School of Business with any questions you might have. They will have all the specifics. What we know is that generally there are more students applying than they have room to admit. We’re not talking 500 students for 145 spots or anything but there are certainly significantly more people applying than room allows for. Generally it is almost entirely by GPA assuming you’ve taken the pre-requisite courses (of which there are five) and enough credits to be a junior. In recent semesters, the GPA needed has been around a 3.2 give or take.

It isn’t incredibly difficult to get in as long as you have a decent GPA. Other than that, you just need that have fulfilled all the prerequisites. They only have 145 spots for Fall (and about 45 for Spring), so obviously quite a few people don’t get in, but those are the students with the lowest GPAs of the application group, typically. If you maintain about an A/B average (3.3+), you should be fine.

what about minoring? I believe a student must apply to Mason to minor - is this competitive as well? Do students interesting in minoring need to wait until Junior year?

@momneedsguidance, yes, the process is the same for those wishing to minor. The application process is relatively similar and done at the same time as those wishing to major in business.

Thank-you all for responding! Knowing the GPA range is very helpful!

@W&M Admission,

I am a transfer student who just got accepted into W&M and applied to Mason today. In the email I got they said that there are only 20 spots available for transfer students entering this Fall. Would you happen to have any kind of statistics as to the average GPA of admitted transfer students into Mason from last Fall? Or any other kind of statistics that would help give me a better understanding as to what my chances are?

@akplaya92, unfortunately we don’t really keep any stats on that since it’s a relatively small cohort of students. But as you can tell from the limited number of spaces, there is competition for admission among transfer applicants. You can certainly contact the Mason School if you have further questions about their process.

@W&M Admission,

Thank you for the reply. I looked into my private message box on this forum today and found messages that you and I exchanged back in 2011 when I was first interested in William and Mary. Thanks again for all the help over the years. I’m officially a Tribe!
