My friend just got accepted to both programs and she is having big issues deciding on where to go......Where do you think she should go and why?

UCLA has the best communications program out of all UCs, plus you can't ignore the geographical advantage you'll have at UCLA (the "Entertainment and Media Capital of the World").

I'd choose UCLA because of what DHL3 just said.

i agree with the above two.. UCLA!!!

I'm having the exact same problem as your friend right now. I applied as a Mass Communications major at Berkeley and a Communication Studies major at UCLA; I was accepted into both programs and simply cannot decide between the two schools, should I get rejected from the other schools I've applied to.

I once heard somewhere that UCLA is better for broadcast journalism, but not necessarily printed journalism...Berkeley has the edge over UCLA in that area. Is this true at all?

bump 10 charhlh;i

bump 10chars

bump 10chars

Even though the program at UCLA is better and people in the academic world will know that, if you tell common people like your parents and their friends or your relatives or anyone who doesn't know much about UCLA's strong communications program, then Berk is definitely the way to go.

I don't know if you have family overseas, but in Asia, Berkeley is ALWAYS better than UCLA no matter what major and just the name will bring you compliments and respect.

Just ask yourself...
I graduated from UC Berkeley

or..

I graduated from UCLA

The prestige at Berkeley cannot be beat no matter what people tell you.

PS: I got accepted into both too, but I'm going to UCLA despite of what I just told you because I can't imagine myself living in that atmosphere.

To BritKid:

Don't worry Britkid, I don't think your competitive edge as an international transfer comes from a 2:1 or 1st (i know I asked first). I think if the coach called you are really likely to get it.

I applied for Economics and Psychology I'm averaging a 2:1 (btw my SAT scores are pathetic) do you know the lowest SAT to enter Harvard??? I only took them once, with virtually no prepping. I did between internship, renting out a flat in london, going home to greece and coming back to uni for the beginning of the year

Funny you mention that, aznhyboi87. I told my Communications professor that I got accepted to both UCLA and Berkeley and was confused with where I should go.

She said to me (verbatim), "How can you even think twice about this. Go to Berkeley, you idiot! It's Berkeley!!"

That shows you how much she knows about their Comm. departments. :p

Your advice followed by posting your own decision to go to UCLA makes me all the more confused!! Arrrgh lol! Is the prestige of Cal that much better than UCLA? Honestly?

MaryTwee, another reason why I chose UCLA over Berk that I failed to mention in my first post is that I got the regents scholarship for UCLA.

yeah, aznhyboi's decision is semi-biased since he got the regents scholarship. In my honest opinion, it doesnt matter which school you choose, whether it is berk or ucla, because in terms of education, they are both great. However, berks reputation has more of a majestic/mystique appeal to individuals out of state, as well as around the world (no matter what department one is speaking of), and that cant be said for UCLA.

If you had to make a choice between both departments, since you cant go wrong, just pick the school that you like best in terms of social life, food, weather, etc.

dhl mentioned something about being in LA which is a media capital, but just to let you know, berkeley is close to SF, which is also known for the entertainment industry filming around that area (movies: x-men, the pursuit of happyness, etc)

aznhyboi: That totally makes sense now. Congrats btw!

mojojojo: Hmm, good point. I'm going to visit Cal again this Saturday and hopefully UCLA in a week or two...to see which feels like a better fit. As of now, they both appeal to me. (I've only visited both campuses once)

Curious (and straying away from the Comm. departments at the moment), is the workload and Berkeley and UCLA about the same? It seems to me that more Cal students than UCLA students are depressed and stressed out...of course I'm generalizing here, but maybe it's just the particular people I know at Cal who seem to be really stressed out.

Thoughts?

it depends on the major, i think im switching to mass comm. lol that means i have to take the mass comm class this summer to declare it as a major in the fall :(
