Mass deferral -- the reason??

I just got deferred from UMich and said that they will respond to me about the decision around mid april. My friends also got deferred, making it seems like UMich deferres applicants, rather than reject them. Does Umich even sends out rejections yet?

What does it mean to be deferred. Typically, how much chance does a deferred applicant have.... is it the same was waitlist??

Deferral is not the same as witlist. Deferral means that they university needs more time to decide. Typically, Michigan accepts a significant portion of its deferred students, but this year is not "typical".

Alexandre, it seems that they defer anyone who isn't ivy league status at first. Do they ever reject anyone? It doesn't seem like it. I want to find out if they accepted or rejected me already! When will I hear the final decision?

They do reject students.

Deferrals were more common this year for a number of factors, but it's not the case that everyone who isn't ivy-calibre gets an immediate deferral.

My kid - much as I love him, isn't ivy caliber - and was accepted right away. Michigan is waiting to see what their yields look like - as they are hoping for a smaller class this year. They've deferred tons of kids - and they know that many of them would be happy to go to Michigan, even if it means they don't find out until mid-April.
