<p>After much debate, and a bit to our surprise, S decided to pass up some very good conservatory options and will be enrolling at Columbia University. He plans to do an academic major and to do Columbia’s “special concentration” (the equivalent of a minor) in jazz performance. He still wants to make a career in jazz, but ultimately he decided (1) he would be able to continue serious pursuit of jazz at Columbia, both within the school and drawing on the resources of New York generally (he may also try to take lessons at Juilliard as part of the Columbia-Juilliard exchange, as there are three jazz pianists he really respects who are affiliated with Juilliard) and (2) he wants to continue to pursue more of an academic program than the conservatories offered. I also suspect he wasn’t quite ready to put all his eggs in the music basket. We’re hoping it works out for what he wants to do, but it’s been two weeks and he has no second thoughts about the decision, so I think it was the right one for him.</p>
<p>Best of luck to your son, jazzpianodad. Does he realize that the competition for the small number of places in the Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program is at a very high level and admission to it is far from automatic even for students who have been accepted independently by both Columbia and Juilliard? I see that he was accepted by some very highly-regarded conservatories, so he must be very talented. Still, getting into the Exchange program is a long shot for anyone.</p>
<p>Thanks BassDad. Yes, he is realistic about, but never daunted by, the odds. He tends to shoot for the stars in terms of the programs he applies to and the competitions he enters, and he’s had his share of rejections, but he’s had some successes too, including some unexpected ones, so he just keeps on plugging. If he decides to try for the Juilliard exchange but doesn’t make it, I have no doubt he’ll figure out something else. I think it’s an attitude that you almost have to have if you’re trying to make it in music or the performing arts generally.</p>
