Master List of Final Decisions, Fall 2012

Congratulations to violinmimi and daughter. As noted on another thread, daughter will attend Oberlin.

Son will attend NEC next year for Jazz Double Bass…very relieved to be done with this process.

(funny about Oberlin…he got stuck there because the cab company forgot to pick him up so he missed his flight and had to stay an extra night. Ended up having a lot of fun and getting his picture taken with one of the comedians from 30Rock.)

Congratulations to StacJip and son.

S will attend USC Thornton BM Jazz Studies Piano - $9K scholarship

He is very excited and feels great and can’t wait to get started. It such a great feeling to have this over!

After a lot of long discussions over the weekend, S has decided to attend Ohio State for jazz performance in double bass. This was a total dark horse, so much so that I didn’t even list it in the acceptance thread. He did receive a $3,000 scholarship.

His further intentions are to double major with a music education degree at Ohio State and continue on for a graduate degree at a conservatory.

Thanks to those who provided advice, it was very useful. Congratulations to all the other decision makers.

Lastly, I am thinking of starting another thread titled “Things I Wish I Knew Three Years Ago”. As a Non Music Dad, I learned a lot through this process.

Congratulations to the recent deciders! And yes, I think it’s a great idea to start a new thread with lessons learned. I tried to search for an older thread as I recall something like that in the past. I’m sure a new one would be helpful while the events of this past year are all still fresh in our minds.

Nonmusicdad … that means you will get to meet (or have already met) Dr. Ted McDaniels. Back in 2009 we met him when my daughter was trying to find a way to do music as well as pre-med, and she landed at OSU for an accepted students overnight. What a great campus … OSU continues to make that campus shine. We only met Dr. McDaniels for a short while, but in that hour, he was able to get across to my D how passionate he is about jazz and music in general. I hope your S loves it there. Congrats on the scholarship, too.

@Squiggles, Back in January, when we were at USC for my S’s audition, he said, “if I get in here, I am going to go.” At the time, I was sad because all I kept thinking about was how far it is (live in PA).However, now that the decision is made, I can’t see him any place else. I see what a great fit it will be. Thorton has been so welcoming in every way, sending lots of informative emails. Even the Director of the Pop Music Program reached out and called my son personally (before he gave his acceptance) and spent a good amount of time on the phone with him. Not one other school did that. He is very excited about the opportunity to be there and is looking forward to the challenge of being surrounded by incredibly talented musicians. Congrats to you and your S for completing the process and I hope to see you there. Also, congrats on his scholarship, too.

Congratulations to squiggles1118 and to nonmusicdad and son.

nonmusicdad, we like to collect all acceptances, not just the ones that are the most likely for matriculation. If there were any others you have not mentioned, please let us know about them over on the acceptance thread.

@poprockmom - Thanks! yes, S had the same experience with the Jazz Studies chair (who is also a piano prof!) He spent the entire trip to the airport last Thurs (way to Reno Jazz Festival) on the phone with him - great to hear the camaraderie between the two, USC is such a good fit. I will pm you…maybe the guys will end up at the same orientation? btw…my D is a Junior at GW (we are Seattle) so I know about the cross country thing. It will be all good :)

Congratulations to bokertov for a decision to attend UCLA for vocal performance, as noted on another thread.

Congratulations to momophony and son for son’s decision to attend Indiana University for composition, as noted on another thread.

Son will attend Manhattan School of Music to study for a Bachelor of Music in Jazz piano. He is incredibly excited, this was his number on choice and he is thrilled to be studying with the MSM jazz faculty in New York City.

Thanks to everyone on this site for your contributions and advice, it has been quite helpful.

Wow, I waited for so long to post on this thread, and then I posted on the wrong one! Thank you BassDad, for everything. I was so happy when I found your long post, and this whole forum, so very long ago. I doubt we could have managed this process without you all! (No goodbyes! I’ll be around…)

Congratulations to viacap and son. I did not have Manhattan School on the list for him, only Berklee and The New School, so I added this on the Acceptances thread as well. If he had any other acceptances we do not know about, I would like to hear about those as well.

Congratulations also to pianosoprano, who announced a decision to attend the University of Maryland for Music Education on another thread.

My son will attend Bard College and Conservatory in the fall (dual degree in percussion performance and BA in a yet to be decided field)

Margun - I’ll add a public welcome here! I’m very excited for your son.

As I thought he might, S waited to make the deposit today, around 5PM. After what feels like a full year of preparing for auditions (bass guitar), driving to auditions in blizzards (well, the 2 we had this year), second guessing the music major altogether, considering some really nice scholarship offers, S has made his decision: Capital University’s Music Conservatory as a Music Technology major. He can do a BM or BA (he auditioned into the BM program) but doesn’t have to decide immediately, so true to form, he won’t until he has to :)

I am thrilled. I always felt that being part of a music school would suit him, a natural musician who had little formal training but taught himself more than many learn with teachers. I am also glad that he opted for a conservatory within a university (albeit a smaller one, 5K or so), so his options are open should he decide history or computer science suits him better. Even if he decides to switch, there will always be a ton of musicians around to play with, and that has always made him happy.

Capital was also very generous, and his music scholarship will stay even if he switches majors, which was an important consideration for him. And he’s been accepted into the honors program which means special dorm, some smaller classes and other cool things. Traveling down this road has been well worth it today :)

Congratulations to margun and son, and to ohiobassmom and son.
